Using Alakazam

Despite Alakazam’s high base Speed and Sp.Attack, its defenses are frail, this makes it a fast Special attacker.

It has a wide range of Special attacks to choose from, which is complemented by the amount of Non-Damaging Moves it could afford to run such as Encore and Disable to incapacitate its opponent for the next turns.

Although it has powerful special attacks, be wary of being outsped by priority moves such as Sucker Punch and Shadow Sneak.

Through Mega-Evolution it can increase its defenses to some extent while further increasing its Sp. Attack and Speed stats. In addition, it changes to the Trace ability which may effectively deflect certain effects back at the opponent.

Fitting Alakazam on your team

■Basic type

Ability Magic Guard
Nature Timid
Effort Values 4 HP / 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Speed
Held Item Focus Sash / Life Orb / Choice Specs
Recommended Move Psychic or Psyshock
  • This set capitalizes on high Speed and Sp. Attack in order to launch powerful Special STAB and coverage Moves.
  • To patch up for its frail defenses, it should equip a Focus Sash so that it could afford to use Encore on the next turn.
  • If a Will-O-Wisp is predicted, Alakazam may come in and incapacitate the opponent with Encore.

Countering Alakazam

Its base Speed stat is high but its durability is lacking, therefore even average STAB damage from a Pokemon it is weak to may finish it off.

Since some sets may run Encore, be careful of using priority moves such as Sucker Punch or Fake Out.
