Using Pelipper

Being blessed with bulky base Defense stat, access to Toxic and Roost makes Pelipper a practical choice for tanking Physical threats.

However, because of its typing, we can’t avoid to compare it to others like Gyarados which make use of Intimidate to act as a similar Physically Defensive Tank. Yet unlike Gyarados, Pelipper can take advantage of Keen Eye to bypass certain modifying moves such as those that lower accuracy or boost one’s evasion as in the case of Minimize.

It’s other ability Rain Dish can also provide longevity especially in most battles that depend on weather.

A breakdown of the suggested moves for Pelipper

Physical Moves Special Moves Non-Damaging Moves
Sky Drop Hydro Pump Toxic
U-turn Surf Soak
Quick Attack Scald Agility
Hurricane Tailwind
Air Slash Rain Dance
Ice Beam Stockpile
Blizzard Roost
Hidden Power Rest

Fitting Pelipper on your team

■Physically defensive type

Nature Bold
Ability Keen Eye or Rain Dish
Effort Values 252 HP/252 Defense
Held Item Leftovers/Sitrus Berry/Wacan Berry/Rocky Helmet
Recommended Moves Roost

· This set capitalizes on self-recovery using moves such as Roost or the Rain Dish ability.

· Since it usually doesn’t invest in Attacking, Pelipper will resort to afflicting status conditions such as from Toxic poison and Scald which has the possibility to burn targets.

· Since it doesn’t have a decent base Sp.Atk stat, it can also opt to run Rain Dance to boost its STAB water moves.

■ Special Attacker type

Nature Modest or Timid
Ability Keen Eye or Rain Dish
Effort Values 252 HP/252 Sp.Atk or 252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed
Held Item Wacan Berry/Choice Specs
Life Orb/Expert Belt
Recommended Moves Hurricane/Hydro Pump

· Aside from the Defensive set, it can also capitalize on attacking since the lack in its Base Sp. Atk can be balanced with a High base power STAB move like Hydro Pump.

· As an all-out special attacker, beware that it needs to sacrifice accurate moves in exchange for low accuracy high base power ones in order to deal decent damage. In addition, it needs a power-boosting held item to complement the damage too.

· Another suggested option is to teach it Tailwind to make up for its lackluster Speed.

Countering Pelipper

In spite of its Defensive bulk, its Special Defense isn’t as high, and what’s worse is that its dual-typing is significantly weak against STAB electric moves, this makes it a solid counter if Pelipper is giving you problems.

When faced with a Rain abusing Pelipper, note that changing the weather will weaken its advantage to heal itself and gain a boost in STAB water moves. This makes switching Pokémon with different weather activating abilities as useful counters.
