Fire Dragon Mauna is the first dragon and first optional boss fight in the game. Below is a guide on how to beat the Fire Dragon Mauna, including preparations, strategies, and recommended party setup.
Should you challenge the Fire Dragon Mauna?
Defeating the Fire Dragon Mauna yields a missable item, a huge amount of EXP, and a bunch of items. Therefore, we highly recommend challenging the dragon to avoid missing out on these great rewards. Moreover, this boss battle will demonstrate the importance of Archetype roles as well as party composition and formation.
Fire Dragon Mauna Overview
First dragon encounter in the game.
By the time you encounter the Fire Dragon, you will have already faced two Human bosses. This will be the first time that a dragon is introduced in the game. However, you won’t be able to defeat it entirely, as it will flee after the battle, suggesting a possible encounter in the future.
Note that this boss fight is optional, and it can be triggered shortly after the Homo Fulquilo boss fight.

The Fire Dragon repels Fire damage, resists Wind damage, and is weak against Ice damage. Because of this, you will need to use Ice skills or Ice damage-dealing items in order to deal significant damage to the boss. We recommend using the Mage Archetype’s Blizz skill or Ice Chunk item to deplete the boss’ HP.
Fire Dragon Mauna Skillset
Fire Dragon Mauna has three skills that it will use throughout the battle. Note that the boss can perform actions two to three times. When the boss hits a weakness, it will gain another turn (up to three turns).
- Fireball – Single-target Fire damage to one of your party member.
- Scratch – Single-target Physical damage to one of your party member.
- Tail Swipe – Multiple-target Physical damage to one row.
Fire Dragon Mauna Boss Strategy
Buy items from the Traveling Peddler before the Homo Fulquilo boss fight.
You may require a substantial amount of recovery items for the Fire Dragon boss battle since it follows the Homo Fulquilo boss fight. Hence, prior to confronting the Homo Fulquilo boss, it’s advisable to purchase items from the Traveling Peddler located outside the Magla Room.
The items that you need depend on the current situation of your team. If you are low on MP but managed to save your recovery items, then it is much better to buy Ice Chunks. The Ice Chunks will allow you to deal Ice Damage to the Homo Fulquilo and Fire Dragon.
Recommended Party Setup
There are two party setups you can run for the Fire Dragon boss. However, it will entirely depend on how you finish the previous boss fight. If you have managed to keep your MP high (preferably 100 MP or higher), you can go with the Seeker + Mage + Warrior party setup.
If your MP is running low, you can consider using a full Fire-resistant team. The Warrior Archetype, which resists Fire damage, can be an effective choice for all your party members. However, this strategy requires studying the Warrior Archetype for each member and stacking up on Ice Chunks, which will consume a considerable amount of your MAGs and money (reeves).
Party Formation
Place the Seeker and Mage in the back row, and place the Warrior in the front row. This will allow you to lessen the damage that the Seeker and Mage might take, while the Warrior can deal 100% of its melee damage.
Use the Mage’s Blizz skill or Ice Chunks item.
The Mage’s Blizz skill will be your main tool to defeat the Fire Dragon, as it will exploit its weakness against Ice. Additionally, your party members can use Ice Chunks to inflict extra damage on the boss. It’s advisable to equip the Mage Archetype to Grius, as the protagonist, Will, has already gained some EXP in the Seeker Archetype at this point.
Use the Seeker’s skills to keep party members healthy.
The Seeker Archetype is equipped with skills that can keep your party members’ HP healthy, and it can also apply an Attack buff to an ally for three turns. It is not necessary to use the Tarakuja (attack buff), as the Seeker’s primary function in this battle will be healing with its Dei skill.
Additionally, the Seeker is weak to Fire attacks, which could grant the boss extra turns if it hits the Seeker with Fireball. If you do not have to use the Dei skill to heal, you can consider passing your turn to other party members, guard, or use Ice Chunks.
Rewards for Defeating Fire Dragon Mauna
Upon defeating the Fire Dragon Mauna, you will be rewarded with an Amethyst. Additionally, you will be able to open the treasure chests in the dragon’s lair. One of these chests contains the purple greatsword weapon, “Dragon’s Indignation,” which can be equipped by your Warrior Archetype character.
