Persona 5 begins in Tokyo and a flashback. The protagonist is sent to Shujin Academy as a means of probation after he saw a politician harass a woman. Blamed for victim blaming, the protagonist is sent to Tokyo to carry out his probation. When he arrives there, he finds out that there are others like him. He joins up with Morgana, Ann, and Ryuji who awaken to their personas as well. With this, they form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts to help corrupt adults reform.
The main theme of Persona 5 is freedom from humanity’s sins. Sins such as pride, greed, wrath, and many others plague humanity. And thus, only the persona users can solve it. With the power of their personas, the thieves begin on their quests to infiltrate the palaces of the corrupt adults. As they infiltrate the palaces, they find themselves changing the hearts of corrupt adults. While infiltrating, the thieves find corruption in the biggest institutions such as schools. When they continue to progress, the thieves find it even in the smallest of relationships. They find it in family member relationships, mentor-apprentice relationships.
However, as the game progresses, the thieves realize that they’re in for more than they expected.
