Game Overview
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (真・女神転生V), is a single-player, turn-based role-playing game. The game is developed and published by Atlus for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth main entry of the Shin Megami Tensei series and it follows Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, the previous entry that launched last September 20, 2016, for the Nintendo 3DS.
SMT V was announced as part of the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch console last January 2017. By February 2018, the fifth title was announced to having entered “full-scale development”. No status or development updates were disclosed but Atlus confirmed that the game is still under active development by 2019. A release date trailer for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance was shown last November 2021.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance aims to feature a world that currently features the characteristics of time such as troubles at home and abroad, according to game producer Kazuyuki Yamai. SMT V was developed through Unreal Engine 4 which is the first time for the developers. According to the producer, the game is a hybrid between the charm Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and fun demon upbringing elements of Shin Megami Tensei IV. The game is scheduled to release on November 12, 2021.
Story
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is set in modern-day Tokyo. The Protagonist is a student from Jouin Academy and investigates a tunnel with his other high school friends, Yuzuru Atsuta and Ichiro Dazai. After a mysterious earthquake occurred inside a tunnel, they accidentally enter another world called Da’at. Da’at is an alternative apocalyptic version of Tokyo in a struggle between two almighty factions composed of angels and demons.
In Da’at, the Protagonist is separated from his friends and is saved by a being named Aogami. Together, they fuse into another being called the Nahobino, a being neither human nor a deity, to defeat the random demons the Protagonist encounters. Later, the Protagonist is by angels and reunites with his friends. They were transported to Bethel Japan, a Japanese branch of international agencies focusing on preventing humanity to get involved with the conflict, and are recruited for the cause. The Protagonist and his friends agreed that they will cooperate with Bethel Japan in terms of protecting their version of Tokyo from Da’at’s conflict. While the Protagonist has Aogami as his source of power, his other pair of friends sign-up for the Demon Summoning Program that allows them to summon demons as their close allies.
Moments after they returned to Tokyo, demons from Da’at started invading their city and the world. This includes their high school, Jouin Academy, and some of their schoolmates like Sahori Itsukishima get abducted by demons. As the Protagonist, you must save your version of the world using the powers of Aogami and eventually ascend to Godhood. Claim the throne and decide what to sacrifice in a world without its creator.
Gameplay
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance shares similar elements from previous Shin Megami Tensei and Persona titles while having its own new and unique gameplay systems as well. Here is a quick summary of SMT V’s unique gameplay:
New Open World Experience
The Protagonist explores the world of Da’at from another perspective. While previous SMT titles feature a birds-eye view exploration, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance offers a first-person view reminiscent of Persona 4 and Persona 5 titles. In SMT 5: Vengeance, you can explore certain locations or habitats within Da’at with fewer restrictions.
Different locations within Da’at features different environments and setting. In addition, demons can be seen roaming around and they vary per habitat. Interact with each of them to level your party or recruit them as your ally. Furthermore, mining points and checkpoints are also visible in the open world. While exploring the world of Da’at, the Moon Phase System will be active as an exploration mechanic.
New Skill Systems
In addition to previous skill systems, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will introduce new skill systems such as the Magatsuhi and Miracles. Magatsuhi skills are strong race-based skills that do not cost MP but rather a full Magatsuhi gauge to execute.
Miracles are also unique passive skills that boost certain stats or quality of Nahobino and his demon allies. It functions similarly to Persona 5 Strikers’ Bond Skills.
New and Updated Skill Mechanics
One of the newest skill mechanics to the game is the addition of the Illusion status under Ailment Skills. Also, the skill affinity mechanic of SMT 4 Apocalypse is also adopted to SMT 5: Vengeance in the form of Skill Potential. Skill Potential refers are skill-type boosts unique to each demon and now it can be utilized by Nahobino as well.
There are also change in skill mechanics implemented in the game. They include changes in usage of the Physical skills. It will no longer consume the user HP but rather MP. SMT Liberation Dx2, a mobile RPG game from the same franchise also shares this mechanic. Expel and Curse skills are renamed to Light and Dark skills. Furthermore, the Hama- and Mudo- skills are reworked to deal regular damage together with an instant death chance.
New and Returning Demons
Staple and signature demons from previous SMT titles will turn up again as allies and foes in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Some of those demons that appeared in Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal, and Persona 5 Strikers series will be carried over to the game. SMT 4 and SMT 4 Apocalypse demons like Adramelech, Artemis, Idun, Cleopatra, Anahita, Demeter, and Mephisto will debut into their newest Unreal Engine 4 forms. New and redesigned demons also debut in the game based on mythological figures and creatures such as Amanozako, Fionn mac Cumhail, Hayataro, and Manananggal.
Each demon obtained have their own Essence that can be used to boost Nahobino and his demon’s allies Skill Potential or Affinities.
