Elden Ring is an action role-playing game by FromSoftware known for the critically-acclaimed Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

A collaborative project between Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and A Song of Fire and Ice author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is set on the fictional realm Lands Between. The shattering of the eponymous Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards known as the Great Runes ushers in the rule of Queen Marika the Eternal’s demigod offspring.

The game’s protagonist, a hero simply known as the Tarnished, sets forth to recover the lost shards of the Elden Ring from the possession of the demigods of the Lands Between and become the Elden Lord told in legend.

As with most FromSoftware games, Elden Ring features punishing difficulty, providing players with a level of challenge characteristic of the franchise. The Tarnished must explore the massive world of the Lands Between while meeting a cast of mysterious characters on their journey.

Challenging boss battles, a feature that the Souls games are known for, are present in Elden Ring. Players are encouraged to observe each boss’ attacks and behavior carefully to defeat them. The freedom that players are given to adopt different playstyles based on how they choose to customize their character will also affect their overall experience against various bosses in the game.

Among the most notable additions to Elden Ring that were not present in previous Souls games is mounted combat. Throughout their adventure, the Tarnished can summon a horse to traverse the expanse of the Lands Between or use their steed to gain better mobility in battle.

For the first time throughout FromSoftware’s acclaimed action RPG titles, Elden Ring will let players explore an open world that boasts a scale never seen before in the Dark Souls games. An entire map filled with caves, ruins, towers, and other dangerous locations can be raided to find treasure as well as challenging enemies lurking in each corner.
