Detroit: Become Human Releases PGW 2017 Gameplay Trailer
Quantic Dream released a Detroit: Become Human gameplay trailer at Paris Games Week 2017. Developers have scheduled to release the game in the first half of 2018.
The Detroit: Become Human developers are known for their previous interactive dramas. These include Beyond: Two Souls and the award-winning Heavy Rain. Judging from the trailers, Detroit: Become Human might have the same gameplay as all the previous games. Multiple choices are offered to the player, which result in multiple different consequences. In addition, outcomes that end in death won’t necessarily end the story, like in Heavy Rain.
The PGW 2017 gameplay trailer sparked controversy by portraying domestic violence and child abuse. Director David Cage defended his usage of violence in the trailer in an interview with Gamespot. David Cage explains that the violence is necessary to tell the story of Kara’s growth into a human being:
“This android goes through the orders–I mean, she has orders: a human master tells her, “Don’t move!” And she needs to go through this to free herself and really become who she is. And she does that through empathy and by love. And she wants to save this little girl. All this has a meaning, and this is only the beginning of a very long story that will take you to very different places.”
Detroit: Become Human is not the only video game depicting extreme violence at Paris Games Week 2017. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 received flack for their incredibly brutal trailer.

Trailer Breakdown
The PGW 2017 gameplay trailer is only three minutes and eleven seconds long, and it clearly sets up the story for the viewer. Kara is an android working for Todd, father to Alice. We see that Todd is an incredibly unstable man by the 1:00 mark.
Todd rages at Alice and commands Kara to stay downstairs while he heads up the stairs to beat his daughter. We see him regret his actions later, laying a dead Alice on her bed.
Around 2:05, the PGW 2017 gameplay trailer shows us some choices we can pick in the gameplay segments. When faced with a rampaging Todd, Kara can choose to run with Alice, lock the room, or confront Todd. These three choices will affect the outcome of the story.
At 2:52, we see a whole web of choices the player can choose in-game. One choice involves Alice shooting Todd with his own gun. The web also implies that Kara could die in the fight, or escape wounded.
After watching the trailer, I can tell that this game will either be phenomenal or an incredible flop. I suppose we’ll have to wait for its release date next year to find out.
