Game Overview

The Ace Combat series is one of the most successful flight action video game franchises today. It is known for its emphasis on fast-paced aircraft combat, as well as offering compelling storyline throughout each title in the series. The first Ace Combat game was released for the Sony Playstation in 1993 and was followed by numerous other subsequent titles featuring its trademark fighter pilot action.

Majority of the Ace Combat games have featured mostly fictional characters, locations and events but allow the player to choose and pilot a wide selection of real-world fighter aircraft, as well as some conceptual model variants. The games have continued to push for the realism of combat piloting, eventually including certain flight mechanics such as runway take-off, landing, and even midair refueling.

The latest entry to the long-running flight simulation game, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown was announced during the Playstation Experience 2015 event. While originally planned only for the Playstation 4, an official trailer released in January 2017 confirmed that it will also be available for the Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be a sequel to Ace Combat 6: Fire of Liberation which was released exclusively for the Xbox 360. The upcoming title will be using Unreal Engine 4 to render its environment and aircraft models as the game’s main graphics engine.

  • First Ace Combat Game for 8th Generation Consoles

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be the first in the series to be developed for 8th generation consoles, allowing for a more exciting experience during air combat throughout the game. This is thanks to the Unreal Engine 4.

  • Realistic Cockpit Interface and Optional VR mode

For an even better feel of combat, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will feature real-world cockpit controls, pushing the realism even more for the game, as well as including an optional VR mode. The series has been known to continuously improve upon its pilot interface with each title in the franchise.

  • An Array of Fighter Aircraft to Choose From

While it hasn’t been confirmed how many fighter aircraft will be available in the game, it is fair to expect that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will allow players to choose from a variety of historical and notorious war planes, including those made iconic by earlier games in the franchise.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is told through the perspective of multipe characters, similar to Ace Combat 04’s narrative style. Despite this, the official trailer hints that a veteran ace pilot will be the protagonist of this title.

  • Main Character

It is highly speculated that the player character is a fighter pilot with the callsign Trigger. His name was mentioned twice in the game’s official trailer.

  • Other Characters

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will feature a myriad of other characters during the events of the game. Among them Mihaly, an aged pilot flying for the EASA, an unnamed Erusian woman, as well as an unnamed scientist.
