Arms is an upcoming sports fighting game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Scheduled for release on June 16, 2017, it features a colorful cast of characters who fight using freely-expanding and flexible ARMs, each with their unique sets of abilities and skills.

This concept makes for very interesting battles, creating a variety of approaches and strategies in engaging your opponent. Characters make use of various interchangeable ARMs that have different properties in the game. They adopt specific elemental attributes which are fire, electric, ice, explosion, stun, blind and wind. Players will have to decide what suits there playstyle and what accentuates the existing strengths of the character they are currently using.

Using the Joy-Con’s sensor controls

Players move their characters in ARMs using the Joy-Con controller unique to the Nintendo Switch. This means that your character directly responds to how you tilt the controller in various angles. You’ll need to experiment and try out as many kinds of gestures to execute certain attacks in the game.

Tilting the Joy-Con forward, backwards, and left and right allows your character to move around. If you extend your left hand forward while holding the left controller, you’ll be able to perform a left punch. Likewise, the right controller will allow you to do a right punch. You can twist and twirl your hands as you’re holding a controller to curve or bend punches. Certain movements will allow you to perform unique moves as well. In addition, you can grab or guard against enemies.

Choose a character that suits your style of play!

ARMs is not just about engaging in a simple brawl with your opponent. You’ll also need to employ your ARM’s unique abilities in battle. To do that, you’ll need to get acquainted with each of the fighters in the game and be able to discern their strengths and weaknesses, each working towards your advantage. You’ll also know how to deal with various types of opponents if you know their moves and abilities.

ARMS Characters — Min Min is good at Carry , while Spring Man excels in counter attacks.

For example, Min Min the Ramen Bomber can “kick away” airborne ARMS to knock them to the ground. She can then follow-up it up with more attacks. Spring Man on the other hand, is a hot-blooded fighter dubbed The Bouncer who can shake-off an opponent’s attack by releasing a “shock wave” which can be canceled as well. He also excels in counter attacks.

Each fighter has his or her own special fighting style, and can be outfitted with a variety of different ARMs so you’ll need to decide which of them suits you the best. It isn’t really an exaggeration to say that the possibilities and combinations are endless.

Fighting battles with the unique time lag element

A unique feature in Arms is the time lag that comes into play as you extend your ARMs towards an opponent. There is a sense of strategy in reading an opponents attacks and how you respond to them, giving it a completely different feel from the typical fighting game. You’ll also have to consider how fast or slow the character you are using is, and think beforehand before throwing you punches in battle.

Complex and diverse attacks that can be executed by both left and right arms may bring an interesting aspect in battles, coupled with the strengths and weaknesses of each character in the game. While certain characters may be at an obvious disadvantage against others, knowing how to play your character and your opponent’s may increase your chances of victory.

Nintendo: No Guest Characters in DLC (June 6, 2017)

A DLC is in the works for Nintendo’s upcoming fighting game Arms on the Nintendo Switch. The company confirms that the update’s focus will be on new characters and stages, though only to include those existing within the world of Arms itself.
