Call of Duty: World War 2 - What is Zombies? Basic Information on CoD Zombies

This page will be introducing the basics of Call of Duty: WWII's zombie mode. You will find information about basic rules, strategies, and manners.

About Zombie Mode

The Zombie Mode for Call of Duty was originally just an extra content the developers decided to add in Call of Duty World at War. Unlike the Black Ops zombie series, WWII zombies don’t have any connection in terms of storyline with previous CoD series.

However strategies effective in previous CoD zombies will still be effective, and veteran zombie players will be able to aim for high rounds after getting used to the new elements. There’s also plenty of easter eggs to solve, for all the easter egg hunters and trophy collectors.

Tips for Beginners

First play in solo and get used to the map before playing co-op. Leveling up is also important as low level players tend to be avoided from high level players.

You might not even be revived if your rank is low or if you go down frequently, since reviving does require other players to risk their lives. Always keep in mind that a single zombie match often lasts more than an hour depending on the players skill, as leaving a match is is one of the must not do in a zombie match, especially after you reach a high round.
Besides aiming for high rounds, solving easter eggs is another main factor when playing zombies, so you should have some knowledge of it as some steps in solving the easter egg sometimes requires all players in a match to participate.

Basic Rules

Progression and Objective

A zombie match will progress in as you complete a round. As the round gets higher, the number, health, and speed of the zombies spawning will increase. After defeating all the zombies that spawned in that round, the next round will begin after a short interval of about 15 seconds. Once all player get downed, the game will end.

An ending for a easter egg will have some king of an cutscene, but the match will still continue (except for Origins and Relevations). But you will be rewarded with a trophy and in game content such as calling cards, so it doesn’t mean there’s no reason to complete an easter egg.
Since there is no winning in a zombie match, the main objective is to survive as much as possible.

About the Player

Health

A player will go down after taking 3 hits before the health fully regenerates. Once a player goes down, there is 15 seconds for other players to revive the downed player. If the player is not revived, it will die. After a player dies, it will spawn back into the game at the start of a new round. You will be able to take 2 additional hits with blitz/perks.

Weapons

All players will star the game with a pistol and 2 grenades. The pistols and grenades don’t have a big difference in terms of damage. Players will have to spend points in order to obtain new weapons. Also keep in mind that 2 grenades will be given to players at the beginning of each round.

In order to obtain weapons you must;

  • Buy weapons off walls (AKA wallbuy).
  • Use the mystery box.
  • Create a wonder weapon.
  • Pickup from zombies.

To increase a weapons firepower you must;

  • Pack a Punch(PaP) a weapon.
  • Buy the increased weapon damage.

Upgrading the Player

There are machines places in the map which can be activated by using points, and a player can hold up to 4 power ups. The effect does not pass over, and you will loose all perks when downed. Be sure to make good use of them as they not only strengthen the weapon but also the strengthen the player.

What a Player can do

  • As for movement, a player can walk, jump, sprint, and dolphin dive.
  • A player can stand, crouch, and go prone.
  • As for attacking, a player can shoot, melee, and throw grenades.
  • After you sprint for a while, the player will run out of breath and will not be able to sprint for a short period of time.
  • The player can activate its special ability once the gauge fills up.

About Points

Usage

By killing zombies you earn points, and with the points you can purchase weapons, the mystery box, and perks. You will also need points to open doors and expand the playable area. Using the Pack a Punch requires points as well. The chance of survival will greatly increase by efficiently earning points in the low rounds, as you don’t have to face the risk of lacking in firepower.

How to Earn Points

You can earn points by hitting a zombie(10pt), killing a zombie(60pt), killing a zombie with a headshot(100pt), and killing a zombie with a knife(130pt). Since you can earn points just by hitting a zombie, you will be able to grind for points when you shoot at a group of zombies since the bullet will penetrate through them. To efficiently grind points, it is best to have a weapon with a low firepower such as a SMG, and a high power weapon to finish zombies and to use when in trouble. You will also be able to earn points by reviving downed players, but will lose points when a player in team dies.

About the Enemies

Zombies

The looks of zombies differ with maps, but there will be no other difference as long as they are zombies.

  • They will only use melee attacks against you, and deals 1 damage to the player when hit(Can take 2 hits before going down).
  • As the round progresses, zombies become harder to kill.
  • The number of zombies that can spawn in a map is limited.
  • It will chase after the closest player, and will respawn when there is no player near the zombie for a long period of time.
  • Their maximum movement speed is slightly slower than a players sprint speed, and can’t turn in a sharper angle than the player.

Basic Strategy Against Zombies

Though the zombies number and health increases as you progress through the round, it will not become impossible to handle mainly because the number of zombies that can spawn at once is about 30-40 zombies. The key to increasing your survivability is to not many any mistakes when dealing with zombies. Since zombies will not catch up to players sprint speed, it is best to take your time when killing zombies.

There is 2 main strategy used by zombie players.
Train: The player constantly moves until zombies pile up behind them, then start killing after zombies stop spawning. It is usually performed in open areas, and moves in a “O” or “8” shape to safely pile up zombies.
Camping:Camping in a position where zombies only come from front. Much more effective when all players in a match camp together. Camping can only be done in certain maps.

Manners for Co-op

No AFk Without a Word

Unlike a solo game, there is no way to pause a game so when you go AFk you will very likely go down. Some players go for revives even when they are in danger, and might lead to the whole team dying. However you can take breaks when someone in your team is luring the last group of zombies. When going AFK, you should tell your teammates using voice chat.

Saving and Spending Points

Though there is no need to aim for max efficiency, wasting points will hold back your team. Since the number of zombies that spawn per round is limited, zombies are also an asset, especially in the low rounds. Saving too much points will be a disadvantage for everyone, since you can’t get ready for high round zombies unless you open doors.

Prepare Before Going Online

Before going online, play in solo and try getting to round 15 several times. It is possible to complete some easter eggs by round 15, and by the time you get used to getting to high rounds, you won’t have any trouble playing Co-op.

Knowing the Risk of Reviving a Teammate

After you get past round 10, it becomes difficult to revive a player alone. Use a special ability, or have someone cover you while reviving. Otherwise you shouldn’t go for revives unless you have confidence that you won’t go down.

Communication Without Voice Chat

When a player shoots you or knifes you, they are usually trying to tell you something. The player might be telling you to follow them, or might be indicating a specific location. Jumping consecutively is usually used as a sign of agreement, or to tell that the player is ready for something, such as a max ammo pick up, or to being a new round. After you get used to zombies, it is not so difficult to determine what the player is trying to tell you. Always keep in mind that everyone has to be active in a zombie Co-op match.
