Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain Game Overview

The Earth Defense Force series is a collection of third-person shooter video games published by D3 Publisher. It is known in Japan as Chikyu Boeigun. The game is part of D3’s Simple series that feature budget-priced console video games, though certain titles have attracted an international audience for their unique gameplay or theme. Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will be the franchise’s latest entry to its sci-fi themed action shooters, and the first to debut on the Playstation 4.

Earth Defense Force debuted in 2003 as Simple 2000 Vol. 31: The Earth Defense Force for the Playstation 2 in Japan. The first title was developed by Sandlot, which went on to design subsequent entries such as Global Defence Force (2005), Global Defence Force Tactics (2006) and Earth Defense Force 2017 (2006).

Development of D3’s 2011 continuation to the series was turned over to Vicious Cycle Software with the release of Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. It is the first Earth Defense Force game to be developed outside Japan, as well as entry to introduce online co-operative play to the available game modes.

Earth Defense Force 2025 was released in Japan in 2013, and in Europe and North America in 2014. The game marks the return of Sandlot as the game’s main developer. It was followed by Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair released in 2015, which was published by XSEED Games.

Two upcoming titles in the series have been announced for the Playstation 4. The first is Earth Defense Force 5, confirmed to be in production during the 2016 Tokyo Game Show event. It is slated for release in Japan on December 7, 2017.

A year later in the Tokyo Game Show 2017’s pre-event panel, Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain was also announced. It is under development by Yuke’s, the company responsible for titles such as Evil Zone, Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage and Rumble Roses. It has been revealed that Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will break away from the series traditional “campy tone”, and will feature a more serious narrative and atmosphere. It is expected to arrive on the Playstation 4 in 2018.
