Game Overview
The Star Wars franchise is one of today’s most recognizable works in the epic space opera film genre, spawning a vast collection of lore and an expanded storyline since it began in 1977 (Star Wars, and later Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981). The events of the series center around the adventures of various characters from “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away“.
The film series takes place in various planets inhabited by diverse lifeforms, including humans (or at least the lore’s depiction of them). The first (or fourth in the primary timeline) Star Wars film follows the journeys of Luke Skywalker, an adventurous and strong-willed youth living on the planet Tatooine destined to rise up against the Galactic Empire and bring balance to the universe. Luke meets a myriad of other characters who have become equally popular to this day. Perhaps more enduring and memorable than Luke himself is his estranged father Anakin, who swears allegiance to the Emperor as the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Spawning an extensive media franchise which includes books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books, Star Wars has an immense community fanbase that continues to this day. Among the games that are based on the franchise’s legendarium are the Star Wars: Battlefront sub-series of games. These are a collection of first- and third-person shooter games that put the player in the role of a soldier in either of the two opposing armies existing in different time periods of the franchise. In order of their release, the sub-series is composed of Battlefront (2004), Battlefront 2 (2005), Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (2007) and Battlefront: Elite Squadron and Mobile Squadrons (2009). Upon acquiring a license to develop the game, EA Dice released a reboot to the series titled Star Wars Battlefront on November 17, 2015.

Star Wars Battlefront 2, the sequel to EA DICE’s reboot of the epic space opera video game based on the acclaimed movie franchise and its expanded works, will be one of highlights during the company’s E3 2017 (Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017) appearance.

Gameplay
- First-Person and Third-Person Combat
Star Wars Battlefront 2 continues the gameplay style of the first game, focusing on first-person and third-person combat with various weapons from the space opera.
- Hero Feature
An interesting feature available in the original Star Wars Battlefront game was the ability to control various characters from the Star Wars franchise. As seen in the image, the player uses Luke to deflect enemy fire back at the attackers.
Included Works in Battlefront 2
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is the follow-up to the reboot title and features a time period and characters based on the most recent films released in the franchise. The most notable among these is Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

New Characters
- Iden Versio
In Star Wars Battlefront 2, players will take control of Iden Versio, a TIE Fighter pilot and member of the Empire’s Inferno Squad. Mark Thompson, game director at EA’s Motive, explains that the development team wanted to tell the game’s story through the eyes of Empire’s own heroes. This marks an interesting contrast to much of the franchise’s focus on the heroic Jedi Order and the Rebellion, which themselves are not all heroic at all.
Characters from the Films
- Darth Maul
After Episode VI: Return of the Jedi in 1983, the franchise decided to take a different turn by releasing prequel works, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). The film details the exploits of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jin and his apprentice, a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. The duo battles with a Sith warrior named Darth Maul who skillfully wields a double-bladed lightsaber.
- Rey and Kylo Ren
First appearing in Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Rey and Kylo Ren will likely be included in the game, as fully-fleshed out characters of the main storyline, and as bonus features in the game. As shown in the image above, players will be able to obtain special character bonuses that allow them to use unique abiliies based off of the two characters in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
- Luke Skywalker (Dark Side)
The franchise most well-known protagonist has also been shown in the game’s trailer, though it appears that the Luke depicted is one who has embraced his Dark Side.
