Shooting Guide
Improving your scoring potential in FIFA 17 demands that you know how to make shots reliably throughout each game. Each player has an arsenal of different kinds of shots and kicks that are useful in various situations. Be sure to acquaint yourself well with how to perform them, as well as the scenarios that they are most applicable to go through the goal.
Types of Shots
Standard Shot
The standard shot can be done by holding down the either O (PS3/PS4) or B (Xbox One) buttons. How long you hold down the button increases the strength of your shot. For best results, it is recommended to perform standard shots at two bars of power within immediate reach of the goalpost by aiming it at the top corners of the goal. However, the Standard Shot is the least recommended shot in the game that makes it easy for the opposing team’s goalkeeper to block or catch the ball.
Finesse Shot
The finesse shot causes the ball to curl or swerve craftily towards the corners of the goal by kicking the ball from the side of the foot. It can be executed by holding down R2 (PS3/PS4) or RB (Xbox One) button. The Finesse Shot is one of most reliable shots to make, even for far post goals. However, it also works well in taking on the opposing team’s goalkeeper one-on-one, if you approach him at an angle.
You’ll want to perform Finesse Shots inside the penalty box, but can also be used outside if your player is positioned at a 90 degree angle.
Chip (Lobbed) Shot
If you hold down the L1+O (PS3/Ps4) or LB+B (Xbox One) buttons as the opposing goalkeeper charges towards you, your player will perform a Lobbed or Chip Shot that goes over him. You must put precise power into the shot. Too much power will result in the ball overshooting the goal. If you perform this inside the penalty box, make sure to charge the power bar to somewhere around 2 and 1/4.
Fake Shot
You can fake shots if you come up to a defender by pressing X (PS3/Ps4) or A (Xbox One) immediately after pressing the shot button (O or B). This is good for getting past defenses using mind games to trick your opponent.
Near Post Shot
The Near Post Shot is one of the trickiest shots to perform, and requires precise positioning of your player to the goal post. Specifically, you need to square your shoulders to the goal post and be inside the penalty box for this to reliably go through. Then as you approach the post, charge your power to just 2 and 1/4. The Near Post Shot is among the most reliable scoring techniques in the game, but positioning yourself correctly requires a bit of feel and practice. It can also be executed as a Finesse Shot, though you’ll need to kick the ball with the outside foot (if the opponent’s goalpost is on the left side of the field, your player’s outside foot will be the left foot as he approaches the post).
Low Driven Shot
Low Driven Shots emphasize the speed of the ball’s travel time on the ground, meaning that it is highly recommended to perform them with at least 2 and 1/2 bars of power to nearly maximum. The shot should be aimed at the bottom left or right of the goal post as you come inside the penalty box. The Low Driven Shot can be done by tapping the O (PS3/Ps4) or B (Xbox One) button two to three times.
Flair Shot
Pressing the L2+O (PS3/PS4) or LT+B (Xbox One) buttons will allow your player to execute a Flair Shot, which range form various crafty maneuvres such as backheels, rabonas, scorpion kicks and the ever-popular bicycle kick from different angles towards the goal post.
