Strategy

Anivia is typically a Mid Lane Champion. Click here to view our Mid Lane Champion Strategy Guide.

  • Anivia is hard to defeat during early game due to your passive skill Rebirth. The extra magic resist and armor makes it hard for a single champion to defeat your egg so try to play aggressively.
  • Despite her passive skill, Anivia is still quite squishy so make sure to ward.
  • Use your (Q) Flash Frost to harass your enemies away from the minion wave. Should it hit your opponent and stun them, cram as much damage as you can with your (E) Frostbite and (R) Glacial Storm. The chilled effect would slow champions down forcing them to take more damage.
  • Use your (W) Crystallize to keep melee champions away. In addition to this, this skill also works well with other champions like VayneGnar and Poppy.
  • In the jungle, Anivia can use (W) Crystallize to create impassable areas for either escaping or blocking escape routes.
  • When your mana is no longer a problem, use (R) Glacial Storm to farm minion waves quickly. This makes Anivia a good split pusher.
  • Take the Blue Sentinel in the Summoner’s Rift for increased Mana Regen and Cooldown Reduction. Use (W) Crystallize to block the Blue Sentinel so they can’t deal any damage on you.
  • Anivia is entirely reliant on her skills which are very mana-heavy, especially her Ultimate Skill (R) Glacial Storm so get Mana and Mana Regen items first.

Core Items

Sorcerer’s Shoes or Ionian Boots of Lucidity

Rod of Ages – Rod of Ages gives its users a large amount of mana, health, and ability power after 10 minutes of building it. Moreover, this item also helps Anivia with her mana since she is a caster and needs mana for her abilities.

Archangel’s Staff – This item, along with Rod of Ages, grants Anivia a ton of ability and mana. Given that she needs a lot of mana for most of her skills, both these items are enough to give her more options when casting abilities.

Morellonomicon – This item makes Anivia more painful. With Morellonomicon, her abilities become stronger and also applies grievous wounds which is essential for DPS AP champions. For example, she hits and stuns an enemy with (Q) Flash Frost, giving her the window of opportunity to (R) Glacial Storm and deal a ton of damage on the enemy affected.

Rabadon’s Deathcap Void Staff Morellonomicon

Rabadon’s Deathcap – Rabadon’s Deathcap is a staple item on Anivia because of how it amplifies her abilities to deal more damage.

Void Staff – Void staff increases the magic penetration of Anivia, giving her more damage even if the enemies build a lot of magic resistance items.

Situational Items
Abyssal mask icon  liandrys torment icon
Banshee’s Veil Abyssal Mask Liandry’s Torment

Banshee’s Veil – This item blocks a spell and also grants magic resistance. Get this item if the enemy has a ton of hard crowd controls and are focusing on you in team fights.

Abyssal Mask – Abyssal Mask makes nearby enemies take more magic damage. This item is a good magic resistance item as well. Get this item if you have another AP champion  in your team who deals a lot of damage.

Liandry’s Torment – Liandry’s Torment also increases your damage output as an AP mid laner. this item is also good for her since she also deals percent health magic damage with Glacial storm.

Playing Against

  • Anivia has a relatively safe laning phase – due to her low mana pool, she can’t spam her skills as much. During the laning phase, force her to use her skills and spend mana – once her mana is low, you can then go for the kill.
  • Be wary of her Rebirth (passive) – if you manage to deal lethal damage to her while her passive is still up, she will revert into an egg. If you don’t manage to kill her while she’s in her egg form, Anivia will be reborn.
  • Anivia has slow movement speed and low health pool so she is very prone to ganks. When her (W) Crystallize is in cooldown, there is nothing she can do to stop your champs from engaging.
  • (Q) Flash Frost moves slowly so it is easy to avoid but just to make sure, buy Boots of Speed.
  • As much as possible, do not engage in prolonged team fights against an Anivia. Her kit specializes in drawn-out battles, and her damage will scale significantly, the longer you’re clashing with her and her team.
  • Engage Anivia whenever her Rebirth (passive) is on cooldown. In fact, she is especially vulnerable when she doesn’t have her egg timer.
  • Be wary of Anivia in the jungle as her (W) Crystallize can block you from both escaping and chasing.

Hard Counters

  • Trundle – First off, we have Trundle. He is a scrappy fighter who can tank Anivia’s damage and stick close to her thanks to his Frozen Domain and Pillar of Ice. He can then tee off with Chomp until he kills her.
  • Katarina – Second, we have Katarina. She is a mobile champion who can punish Anivia if she misses her skills. Katarina can deal sustained magic damage to whittle down Anivia, or outright burst her down with her Bouncing Blade + Shunpo and Death Lotus combo if Anivia doesn’t hit her with (Q) Flash Frost.
  • Draven – Finally, we have Draven. He has high physical damage, and can snipe down Anivia thanks to the critical strike chance and bonus Attack Damage he gets from Spinning Axe, even in her egg form.
