Strategy
- Jayce specializes in dealing massive poke damage with his (R) Mercury Cannon stance and finishing off opponents with his (R) Mercury Hammer. It is crucial to determine when you’re deciding to switch from Hammer to Cannon stance, as it gives you different skills.
- Zone out and poke your enemy laner with (Q) Shock Blast to keep your opponent from getting farm and experience.
- Cast (E) Acceleration Gate and have your (Q) Shock Blast pass through it to speed up its velocity to hit unsuspecting enemies for massive damage.
- Activate (W) Hyper Charge to gain an attack speed boost when you’re sieging the enemy tower or when finishing off opponents during clashes.
- When your enemy laner decides to engage you, you can switch to (R) Mercury Hammer and punish him with (Q) To the Skies + (W) Lightning Field. If you’re low on health, you can knock your enemy back with (E) Thundering Blow to get some distance.
- Hitting an enemy with (Q) To the Skies will damage and slow the enemy, giving Jayce an opening to auto attack and inflict further damage.
- Position your (E) Acceleration Gate in such a way that your allies can pass through it to give your team a movement speed boost.

The Black Cleaver | Youmuu’s Ghostblade | Duskblade of Draktharr |
The Black Cleaver – The Black Cleaver is a great item for Jayce. It gives him bonus health and damage, and more importantly, this item makes his damaging skills and physical attacks shred the armor of enemies he hits.
Given that Jayce is a transform champion, whittling down your opponents from a distance then closing in with his melee form with this item in hand makes duels and clashes swing to his favor more often than not.
Youmuu’s Ghostblade – Jayce has somewhat lackluster escape mechanisms: outside of his (E) Acceleration Gate and Flash, once he’s used these skills, he is vulnerable. Youmuu’s Ghostblade gives him another skill to get out of dodge if he needs to. Offensively, Youmuu’s Ghostblade gives Jayce good Attack Damage, Lethality and another movement speed steroid to chase down opponents.
Duskblade of Draktharr – Another Lethality item that fits Jayce, Duskblade of Draktharr synergizes with his long range pokes. It gives Jayce good Attack Damage and Lethality, and since his (Q) Shock Blast can be casted at a good distance, it can proc the Duskblade’s passive bonus damage, leading to good harass in-lane and during clashes.

Ninja Tabi | Guardian Angel | Blade of the Ruined King |
Ninja Tabi – Ninja Tabi is a standard boots upgrade for top laners. This item gives good armor and movement speed. Besides that, Ninja Tabi is particularly useful when your lane opponent relies on dealing physical damage, as it lessens your opponent’s damage output on you.
Guardian Angel – Guardian Angel is another good defensive item for Jayce. It gives decent Attack Damage and armor, which Jayce needs. Furthermore, Guardian Angel resurrects its user if he or she receives fatal damage. Most enemies tend to focus on Jayce during team fights, especially when Jayce is fed, so getting this item can help you survive such instances.
Blade of the Ruined King – This item gives Jayce some lifesteal and sustain during the laning phase. Blade of the Ruined King also inflicts good damage against enemies who stack health items or have generally high health stats such as tanks.
Situational Items | ||
---|---|---|
Mercury Treads | Mortal Reminder | Infinity Edge |
Maw of Malmortius | The Bloodthirster |
Mercury Treads – Mercury Treads is a good alternative to Ninja Tabi, especially if the enemy team has high Crowd Control. It gives good magic resistance and movement speed, in addition to the lessening of the duration of crowd control effects you might incur.
Mortal Reminder – Mortal Reminder is a good item to get when your team needs to shred through tanks. It gives good Attack Damage bonuses in addition to armor penetration. Mortal Reminder is especially when Jayce is able to hit and auto attack, thanks to its passive that scales with the enemy’s health regeneration.
Subsequently, you can switch to Lord Dominik’s Regards to deal massive damage against enemy champions who stack health items. This is due to the fact that this item deals bonus damage based on the health of opponents who have more
Infinity Edge – A solid addition to Jayce’s already high-damage kit, Infinity Edge gives good bonus Attack Damage to Jayce. Moreover, Infinity Edge grants Jayce with increased critical chances when auto attacking enemies. This synergizes well with his (W) Hyper Charge, as it boosts his attack speed.
Maw of Malmortius – If the enemy team has heavy magic burst damage, you can get Maw of Malmortius. It gives Jayce decent Attack Damage and magic resistance stats. Moreover, it provides Jayce with a spell shield that procs when he reaches a certain point in his health. Get this item to decrease the likelihoood of getting bursted down by the enemy mages.
The Bloodthirster – If you need to have more sustain during the laning phase and clashes, get the Bloodthirster. This item gives good Attack Damage and lifesteal. While Jayce is auto-attacking, the damage can overheal Jayce, and the bonus damage tranforms into a shield that protects Jayce from damage, so long as he gets to hit his enemies with his auto attacks.
Playing Against
- Stay behind your minion wave to lessen the likelihood of getting hit by (Q) Shock Blast. Also, avoid clumping together with your teammates, as he can combo his (Q) Shock Blast with (E) Acceleration Gate to deal massive damage.
Subsequently, have your tanky allies go in front of your team at all times to avoid being poked by Jayce’s (Q) Shock Blast. - Jayce has trouble keeping up his damage output against enemy champions who have good lane sustain (i.e. self-healing, lifesteal or spell vamp) during the laning phase.
- Watch out when Jayce changes stances – his (R) Mercury Hammer turns him into a melee fighter, while his standard (R) Mercury Cannon makes him a ranged damage-dealer.
- Changing from Hammer to Cannon stances usually has a set cooldown. Use this to your advantage – while he is transforming his Hammer to a Cannon or vice versa, if you can, get close to him and punish him for. This will severely make him play safer, as Jayce usually builds full-damage, and is especially vulnerable if enemies get close to him.
- His (Q) To the Skies can be dodged with a well-timed Flash or dash skill.
- Jayce is relatively squishy and apart from his (E) Thundering Blow and (Q) To the Skies, he has limited mobility to distance himself should enemies get close to him. Rush him during clashes to catch him off-guard.
- Likewise, it is best to coordinate with your jungler or other teammates to eliminate Jayce during the laning phase and in clashes.
Hard Counter
- Yorick – Yorick is a tanky champion who can stand toe-to-toe with Jayce. During the laning phase, he can spam his ghouls. He can lock him inside his Dark Procession, then wallop him with Last Rites and Mourning Mist to deal a good chunk of damage.
- Xin Zhao – Xin Zhao excels in bum-rushing onto single targets and eliminating them in quick fashion. He can blitz Jayce and stick to him with Audacious Charge and Three Talon Strike. Furthermore, thanks to his passive, Challenge, he can sunder Jayce’s armor and deal more physical damage, while Xin Zhao gets lifesteal every third auto attack with Battle Cry.
- Fiora – Fiora is a highly mobile duelist who can rush Jayce for massive damage. Her Duelist’s Dance makes her damage to Jayce even more potent should she manage to proc all the vital points. Moreover, she can deflect Jayce’s (Q) Shock Blast with Riposte, which can slow him down if he gets too close.
- Pantheon – Pantheon is proficient at lane harassment thanks to his Spear Shot. Once he gets Jayce low, he can follow up with Aegis of Zeonia to stun him and deal massive damage with Heartseeker Strike. Pantheon can also block Jayce’s auto attacks each time he has his Aegis Protection active.
