Strategy

  • Building movement speed items are very important when playing Hecarim as his passive Warpath gives him more damage equal to the percentage of his movement speed.
  • Time your (R) Onslaught of Shadows when the enemy champions are clumped together as to deal maximum damage and instill fear on a number of enemies.
  • (E) Devastating Charge is best used when you are behind an enemy champion by knocking them near your team mates. Activate the skill as early as possible to maximize the distance traveled and increase the damage dealt.
  • (R) Onslaught of Shadows is also a surprise skill since it can traverse through walls. Use this skill for escaping by casting your ultimate in passable walls.
  • (W) Spirit of the Dread is best used in team fights where enemies are taking massive amounts of damage.

Skirmisher’s Sabre: Cinderhulk – Cinderhulk provides Hecarim with tankiness and defensive stats that can help Hecarim survive when initiating a team fight

Boots of Swiftness – Boots of Swiftness is the best boots upgrade for Hecarim as it has the highest movement speed attribute compared to the other boots upgrade, increasing his damage as well.

Trinity Force – Trinity Force is a very versatile item for a lot of reasons. The item provides ton of offensive and defensive stats such as attack damage and cooldown reduction. Furthermore, Trinity Force also gives movement speed that also ramps up when you basic attack a unit.

Dead Man’s Plate – Dead Man’s plate is a good defensive item for Hecarim. The passive allows him to generate momentum stacks, increasing his movement speed in the process. Moreover, he will also deal more damage and apply a slow when he attacks an enemy at full stack. On top of that, this item can be used along with (E) Devastating Charge.

Banshee’s Veil – Banshee’s Veil is a great magic resistance item for Hecarim. This item’s passive gives him a spell shield which blocks an ability. This allows him to fully use (E) Devastating Charge without the worry of being stunned.

Righteous Glory – The active of Righteous Glory increases your movement speed when moving towards an enemy, making this item very strong when ganking a lane or chasing critical enemies. The extra armor, health, and other additional stats in this item also helps him a lot defensively.

Warmog’s Armor

Iceborn Gauntlet – Substitute this with Trinity Force if you want to be more tanky and defensive.

Randuin’s Omen – Randuin’s Omen is a great item for Hecarim if the enemy has a lot of mobility.

Frozen Heart – Frozen Heart is a very situational item, as it can be only effective when most of your enemies rely on attack speed to deal damage.

Warmog’s Armor – Warmog’s Armor increases the overall survivability of Hecarim, as it gives him a huge amount of healing and health. Get this item if you want to be a major frontline in team fights.

Playing Against

  • Using Exhaust or skills that reduces movement speed will greatly reduce Hecarim’s attack damage.
  • Stun Hecarim right after he uses (E) Devastating Charge to decrease the damage output of the skill since it increases based on the distance he traveled since activating it.
  • Avoid sticking together in team fights so that he will have a hard time fearing multiple enemies with (R) Onslaught of Shadows.
  • Hecarim is a weak jungler early game when he doesn’t have his movement speed items yet. It’s best to counter jungle him early in the game and capitalize on his weakness before level 6.
  • Hecarim is a very agile champion that excels at close range encounters and chasing down enemies. As such, it’s best to counter-pick with champions that have a lot of crowd control such as stuns or slows.

Hard Counters

  • Nautilus – Nautilus is a very crowd control-focused champion that has a ton of ability that can immobilize his enemies. Staggering Blow can stop Hecarim when he uses Devastating Charge. Depth Charge can also catch him regardless of how far he has escaped. Furthermore, good Nautilus players can also displace Hecarim with Dredge Line.
  • Nasus – Nasus can cast Wither on Hecarim to greatly decrease his movement, therefore decreasing his damage in the process. Furthermore, the longer the game progresses, the stronger Nasus becomes. In fact, he can duel Hecarim once he gets his Siphoning Strike stacks up.
  • Dr. Mundo – Dr. Mundo excels at getting close to his enemies with his Infected Cleaver and Sadism.  The damage output of Hecarim will decrease as Mundo can slow his movement speed with Infected Cleaver. The skill also has a very low cooldown, allowing Mundo to spam it against his enemies.
