Strategy
Support
- Morgana’s (Q) Dark Binding can be used for offense and defense. During the laning phase, do your best to cast (Q) Dark Binding on an opposing champion to leave him or her open to follow up damage from your lane partner. Defensively, if the enemy team decides to gank your lane, assess which enemy champion needs to be hit with your (Q) Dark Binding – the ganking champion or the damage dealer are good choices to root, as it mitigates their damage output.
- During the laning phase, you can cast (W) Tormented Soil on enemy laners to damage and zone them. Be careful not to cast it on the enemy minion wave often, though, as you might kill some of the creeps which your lane partner needs to farm his or her items.
- Morgana’s (E) Black Shield is one of her staple skills which can be used for offensive or defensive. Defensively, you can cast (E) Black Shield on your lane partner to render him or her immune to magic damage and crowd control effects such as Stuns, Fears, Taunts, Silences, Roots, etc. You can use (E) Black Shield offensively by casting it on an allied carry who is susceptible to crowd controls and disables (i.e. Master Yi, Katarina, Malzahar, etc.). This way, when they start to engage the enemy team, they are immune to magic damage and disables so long as (E) Black Shield persists.
- Morgana’s ultimate, (R) Soul Shackles, can root multiple enemy champions, provided that Morgana stays tethered to them for the whole duration of the spell.
- (R) Soul Shackles synergizes with her (Q) Dark Binding and (W) Tormented Soil well. Her ultimate needs her to get close to enemy champions in order for the tether to activate. You can either use (R) Soul Shackles first, then try to root fleeing enemies with (Q) Dark Binding, or hit them with (Q) Dark Binding first then use your ultimate to increase the likelihood of your (R) Soul Shackles stun to activate. Remember to cast (W) Tormented Soil on rooted enemies to maximize your damage.
Mid Lane
- (W) Tormented Soil is your main farming tool in-lane. Do your best to cast (W) Tormented Soil on the enemy minion wave to maximize your chances of last hitting them.
- You can cast (W) Tormented Soil on enemies you’ve rooted with (Q) Dark Binding for good damage.
- You can cast (E) Black Shield on yourself to avoid getting damaged or disabled by enemy champion’s skills and crowd control.
- Casting (E) Black Shield on yourself can also increase the chances of you hitting the enemy team with the full damage of your (R) Soul Shackles, as it makes you immune to crowd control and disables.

Playing Against
Support
- Hide behind your minion wave to lessen the likelihood of being snared with (Q) Dark Binding.
- Avoid Morgana’s (W) Tormented Soil when she casts it, as it deals damage over time.
- Be aware when Morgana casts (E) Black Shield. If she casts it on one of her allies, it lessens your chances of disabling that champion. It is best to force Morgana to cast (E) Black Shield on herself so that your team can focus on her lane partner.
- Distance yourself as fast as you can if Morgana casts (R) Soul Shackles on you. You have a small window to escape before her ultimate’s duration expires and you get rooted.
Mid Lane
- Avoid being hit by Morgana’s (Q) Dark Binding, as it leaves you open to her (W) Tormented Soil and you are dealt more damage.
- Steer clear where Morgana casts her (W) Tormented Soil. It is usually her most damaging skill when she is played in the mid lane.
- Time your pokes against her well – force her to cast (E) Black Shield early on herself, as it has a long cooldown during the early game, and this leaves her susceptible to magic damage and disables.
- Break her (R) Soul Shackles‘ tether by distancing yourself from her when she casts it on you to avoid being rooted in place.
Hard Counter
Karma – Her Inner Flame, Soul Flare, Focused Resolve and Renewal can break Morgana’s (E) Spell Shield if she decides to initiate. Defensively, her Inspire and Defiance can shield the damage of Morgana’s (Q) Dark Binding and (W) Tormented Soil.
Janna – She can thwart most initiates from enemy laners. Her Howling Gale can knock up multiple enemies, while her Monsoon pushes enemies away, healing her allies and allowing her team to escape and regroup. She can slow Morgana down with her Zephyr skill, forcing Morgana to use her (E) Black Shield on herself. Janna can also shield her ally using Eye of the Storm, making Morgana’s target harder to eliminate.
Assassin Champions – Morgana has trouble dealing champions who deal high single-target Attack Damage against her allied carries, as her (E) Black Shield can only block magic damage, and most assassin-type champions are elusive, which means hitting them with (Q) Dark Binding is a frustrating prospect. Champions such as Talon, Zed, Riven and Yasuo prove to be hard to contend with – Morgana will need her team to handle such threats.
