Strategy

  • Mordekaiser thrives during clashes, dealing area of effect damage, targeting and shutting down enemy ADRs and turning a 5v5 into a 6v4 team fight.
  • Mordekaiser’s Iron Man (passive) grants him a damage shield depending on how many enemies you’ve hit with any of your skills.
  • Time your (Q) Mace of Spades to maximize your damage against enemy laners – Morderkaiser’s third strike is the strongest one, so it is best to hit your opposing laner with it.
  • Cast (W) Harvester of Sorrow on yourself during the laning phase to deal a small area of effect damage around you. Try to hit as many enemies as possible to have a bigger heal when you reactivate this skill.
  • You can also cast (W) Harvester of Sorrow on one of your ally during clashes and converge onto enemy champions to ramp up your overall damage.
  • Use (R) Children of the Grave on the enemy ADRs, since they usually have strong auto attacks, and the ghost versions can only do basic attacks against opponents.
  • Make the most out of (R) Children of the Grave‘s passive – when you kill Dragons, you will have a ghost version of the Dragon that you can use to provide significant lane and objective pressure (i.e. taking down turrets or Baron Nashor).
  • Take note that when you secure a Dragon, it disables (R) Children of the Grave until the ghost dragon is killed by the enemy team.

Core Items
Rylai's Crystal Scepter icon Liandrys torment icon
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter Hextech Gunblade Liandry’s Torment

Rylai’s Crystal Scepter – Mordekaiser’s staple item, Rylai’s Crystal Scepter gives him bonus health and Ability Power, enabling him to engage and soak damage whenever he’s in a clash. Moreover, it buffs his skills, adding a slow to enemies it hits. This allows Mordekaiser to stick close to enemies and beat them to submission.

Hextech Gunblade – Hextech Gunblade gives Mordekaiser good bonus Ability Power, Attack Damage, Lifesteal and Spell Vamp, Moreover, it has an active skill that slows down an enemy he targets. This allows him to stick to his enemies and survive team fights.

Liandry’s Torment – Mordekaiser’s damage against enemies increases with Liandry’s Torment. This is due to its passive that applies a debuff on enemies, letting them incur damage over time. This is damage is doubled against disabled enemies. Pair this item with Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, and Mordekaiser’s skills will deal massive damage.

Sorcerer’s Shoes – These boots upgrade gives Mordekaiser increased Magic Penetration, as well as decent movement speed. Against squishy champions, he deals even more damage with his skills.

Zhonya’s Hourglass – A standard defensive item for Mordekaiser, Zhonya’s Hourglass gives him good bonus Ability Power and armor. Moreover, it has an active skill that renders Mordekaiser immune to crowd control and any enemy skills for a short duration.

Void Staff – Void staff further increases Mordekaiser’s damage output. This item gives him increased magic penetration on top of bonus Ability Power, which equates to stronger skill damage against enemies.

Situational Items
Spirit visage icon Dead mans plate icon Steraks gage icon
Spirit Visage Dead Man’s Plate Sterak’s Gage
Mercurys treads icon
Mercury Treads

Spirit Visage – For enemies who tend to spam magic damage such as Ryze, Annie, and Ziggs, get Spirit Visage. It gives Mordekaiser bonus health, health regeneration, and magic resistance. Furthermore, any healing effects he incurs increases – for example, if he has Hextech Gunblade, he gains more lifesteal and spell vamp whenever he damages.

Dead Man’s Plate – Deadman’s Plate further increases Mordekaiser’s tanking capabilities. It gives good armor and health, and its passive provides good bonus movement speed based on momentum stacks. At full stacks, Mordekaiser’s auto attacks slows an enemy for a short duration.

Sterak’s Gage – Mordekaiser needs to be inside clashes to dish out punishment. However, he needs to be alive to deal damage; getting Sterak’s Gage is a good option, as it gives him bonus health and Attack Damage. Furthermore, it grants him a health shield for a short duration when his life bar reaches a certain point.

Mercury’s Treads – For enemies who pack hard crowd control, getting Mercury’s Treads is a good boots upgrade. This helps Mordekaiser during clashes – it lessens the duration of enemy crowd control effects.

Playing Against

  • Mordekaiser is highly reliant on farming his items to get his damage output going. Coordinate with your team to take him out during the laning phase to prevent him from getting his items early.
  • Mordekaiser thrives in prolonged skirmishes, as he can acquire his shield from Iron Man (passive) whenever he hits you with his skills. Do your best to burst him down, especially in the early game.
  • Keep your distance when Mordekaiser casts (Q) Mace of Spades – his third auto attack will deal massive damage if he manages to hit you.
  • Mordekaiser’s skills give him additional shielding whenever they hit enemies, thanks to his Iron Man (passive) skill. Counteracting this involves avoiding his skills whenever he casts them. Conversely, disabling him first helps mitigate his overall damage.
  • As much as possible, steer clear from Mordekaiser’s (W) Harvester of Sorrow, especially if he casts it on his ally. Lessen his damage by avoiding the two circles.
  • Mordekaiser focuses on your team’s carry, especially the ADR, during clashes. Do your best to prevent him from getting close to your team’s carries.
  • Mordekaiser always targets enemy carries with (R) Children of the Grave. Should this happen, it is best to back away from the team fight. If your carry dies, the opposing team will have a ghost version of your carry that can deal auto attack damage to your team.
  • If you are playing ADR and Mordekaiser casts (R) Children of the Grave on you, you can cleanse yourself using Quicksilver Sash.
  • It is best to be extra vigilant and secure Dragons for your team, as Mordekaiser’s team can get a ghost dragon thanks to (R) Children of the Grave.

Hard Counter

  • Garen – Garen’s tendency to bully people out of the lane is well-documented. In the case of Mordekaiser, the shields he gets from hitting Garen with his skills aren’t enough to mitigate his Judgment. Moreover, Garen’s Decisive Blow silences Mordekaiser, rendering him unable to cast his skills when he engages.
  • Darius – Darius is notorious when it comes to dealing heavy burst damage against his lane opponents. This doesn’t bode well for Mordekaiser, as he does not have good health regeneration stats until he gets his items. Darius is more than capable in whittling down Mordekaiser’s health during duels, eventually setting up for his Noxian Guillotine.
  • Swain – Swain’s sustain in the lane is just too much for Mordekaiser to handle one-on-one. Good Swain players ensure all their skills hit Mordekaiser to limit his ability to cast skills.
  • Yorick – Yorick has strong sustained damage, as well as zoning mechanics. Dark Procession has the potential to trap Mordekaiser in place, while Yorick wails on him with Last Rites.
