This article is about the author's thoughts on the upcoming League of Legends pre-season update which includes changes to IP, leveling system, and runes.
Pre-season Store Page Reworked
A glimpse of the upcoming store page for the pre-season

Riot just recently released a Riot Pls video that reveals what they’re planning to do for the upcoming pre-season after the conclusion of Worlds – and it is huge.

To give you a brief description of the upcoming changes, first, they will be removing the level 30 cap. Leveling up also grants you different rewards such as special emotes and capsules that unlocks champion shards and blue essence. For experienced players, this means that they will have something to work on again because of the uncapped leveling system.

Second, they will be removing the influence points (IP) system for buying champions and rune pages. Instead, Riot will now merge IP and blue essences. IP will be removed from the game and blue essences will be the new main currency in the game as you play along.

Lastly, all of the runes will be free. Riot also gave us a sneak peek on the new rune system earlier this year, promising new and exciting changes to how runes work in the game.

What I think of the Pre-Season Change

Riot has done a good job in these changes as it may attract old time players who already quit the game or even attract new players who want to give League of Legends a try.

Riot will be removing the level 30 cap. It’s something I look forward to, as it adds more depth to the game which allows old players to grind even more for the rewards and the bragging rights.

The IP and blue essence merge is also a welcome change to the game –  collecting blue essences now becomes important, even though you have unlocked almost all of the champion and mastery level seven of your main champions, as its the currency you’ll need to purchase even more items in the store.

As for the runes rework, it will be a while before we see the finality of the changes that Riot wants to implement. They have teased us with a few rune effects that acts more like a keystone mastery. I expect these new rune mechanics will be initially hard to balance, and that Riot will have their work cut out for them when it comes to making this system work for everyone.

The fact that Riot will implement these changes next season are exceptional. This just goes to show that they are really listening to their player base, and are adjusting to the current nature of the game. They have done really well with the new latest client overhaul, and I expect nothing but the best for these new changes.
