Strategy

  • Rakan excels in shielding and healing his allies during skirmishes and team fights. Cast (E) Battle Dance on your allied teammates who are in need of quick shielding and protection such as your team’s carries. Furthermore, (E) Battle Dance can be casted twice, allowing him to shield more than one ally champion or shield one allied champion twice.
  • (E) Battle Dance‘s distance greatly increases whenever Rakan uses this skill on an allied Xayah.
  • During the laning phase, use your (Q) Gleaming Quill to hit opposing champions then return to your lane partner in order to heal them. Consequently, you can use this to damage enemy laners, but use it primarily to heal your lane partner especially during small skirmishes, ganks and team fights.
  • (W) Grand Entrance has offensive and defensive uses. Offensively, Rakan can initiate team fights by casting (W) Grand Entrance onto an enemy team, knocking up opposing champions and leaving them open for his team to deal follow up damage. Defensively, Rakan can use (W) Grand Entrance to disable any enemy champions who want to dive into his team’s carries.
  • Rakan can combo (E) Battle Dance with (W) Grand Entrance to provide both shielding for his allied carries and crowd control against the enemy team. He can cover distances and assist an ally tank in initiating or disengaging team fights by shielding his allies and knocking up the opposing front line.
  • (R) The Quickness synergizes well with Rakan’s (W) Grand Entrance. Cast (R) The Quickness first, then enter the enemy lineup with (W) Grand Entrance, and run through the enemy carries to taunt them as you head back to your team, rendering the enemy carries unable to deal damage during team fights.

Eye of the Oasis – This item combines the utility of Sightstone and Nomad’s Medallion into one convenient item. It offers Rakan bonus health, mana regeneration and cooldown reduction. Redemption – This item enhances Rakan’s support capabilities by enabling him to heal his team in a pinch. Redemption provides bonus health, health and mana regeneration, as well as cooldown recduction.

Ardent Censer – This item synergizes well with Rakan’s (E) Battle Dance. It adds an Attack Speed bonus and an on-hit magic damage that heals the dealer for the same amount for a short duration to each allied champion he casts (E) Battle Dance on. Ardent Censer provides Rakan with bonus Ability Power, movement speed, base mana regeneration and cooldown reduction.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity – This boots upgrade provides Rakan with decent cooldown reduction, allowing Rakan to spam his (E) Battle Dance and (Q) Gleaming Quill.

Locket of the Iron Solari – This item allows Rakan to cast an area of effect shield around him, giving his teammates more protection during team fights. Furthermore, Locket of the Iron Solari gives him bonus armor and magic resistance, granting him some lasting power whenever he engages enemies.

Knight’s Vow – This item further increases Rakan’s supportive role. Knight’s Vow has good armor and health stats, apart from cooldown reduction. Moreover, its active skill lets Rakan absorb some damage incurred by his partner.

Mercury Treads Mikael’s Crucible Righteous Glory

Mercury Treads – This boots upgrade is addresses enemy teams who have generally high magic damage and crowd control. It gives bonus magic resistance and helps him during clashes where he is disabled, as Mercury Treads lessens the duration of crowd control skills.

Mikael’s Crucible – This item addresses champions who specialize in single-target magic damage and crowd control. It allows Rakan to cleanse an ally champion of disables, enabling that champion to escape or continue dishing damage.

Righteous Glory – This item boosts Rakan’s initiation capabilities. It gives him bonus health and mana, cooldown reduction and health regeneration. Moreover, Righteous Glory also gives him an active item skill that greatly increases his movement speed when moving towards enemy champions, and slowing enemy champions when used again. Paired with (W) Grand Entrance and (R) The Quickness, Righteous Glory ensures your team engages the enemy head-on.

Playing Against

  • Avoid Rakan’s (Q) Gleaming Quill to prevent his lane from gaining health during the laning phase or during small skirmishes.
  • Avoid bunching together, as (W) Grand Entrance can knock up multiple enemies at once
  • He is susceptible to hard crowd control such as Stuns, Fears, Roots, Silences and Slows, especially if his (E) Battle Dance and (W) Grand Entrance are in cooldown.
  • Be aware when he uses (R) The Quickness. He usually follows this up with (W) Grand Entrance or with Flash, disabling most of your team. That said, it is best to distance yourselves so that Rakan can’t charm your whole team.
  • It is best to displace and disable Rakan from his team’s carries to limit his support capabilities during clashes.

Hard Counter

Alistar – His Pulverize can punish Rakan should he think of engaging. Alistar can displace him with Headbutt, which limits the range of his (E) Battle Dance, unless his lane partner is Xayah. Finally, his Unbreakable Will can cleanse Alistar off (R) The Quickness‘ crowd control to let Alistar rally back to his carry and provide the necessary protection.

Morgana – Morgana’s Black Shield negates (W) Grand Entrance and (R) The Quickness‘ crowd control effects. Apart from this, she can also root him with Dark Binding, leaving him open to damage and thwarting his initiates.

Zyra – She can zone out Rakan during the laning phase. When he engages using (W) Grand Entrance, Zyra can punish him with Grasping Roots, disabling him from using (E) Battle Dance for a short duration and leaving him open for Zyra’s lane partner to damage. Furthermore, Zyra can also poke him and his lane partner with Deadly Spines. Finally, she can provide disengagement for her team by casting Stranglethorns during unwanted clashes.
