2017 League of Legends World Championship Seed Placement
As with previous years, the seed placement for the regions is based on their performance in international tournaments such as MSI 2017. Stronger regions are allotted three seeds in the Group Stage of this year’s League of Legends World Championship, while the others are given two or one seed and begin in the Play-In Stage, which will take place in Wuhan, China.
Since Korea has won the recent MSI, all of their seeds are placed on the Group Stage. The rest of the regions with three seeds, namely LPL (China), NA LCS (North America), EU LCS (Europe), and LMS (Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) will have their third seeds enter the Play-In Stage.
Because of the strong showing of GPL’s representatives in the recent MSI, they have been awarded two seeds.
They will be joined by the second seed of GPL (Southeast Asia), and the first seeds from CBLoL (Brazil), LCL (Russia), LJL (Japan), LLN (Latin America North), CLS (Latin America South) OPL (Oceania), and TCL (Turkey).
The Play-In Stage
As mentioned earlier, out of the 24 teams punched in for this year’s tournament, 12 teams are slated to fight in the Play-In Stage to get a spot in the Group Stage. Teams will be grouped in three different pools and will be placed in four different groups, where they will engage in a double round robin, Best of 1 Series-style elimination.
After the round robin, the top two teams from each group will advance to the next Play-In round, where each #1 team will be paired against a #2 team in a Best of 5 series. After that, the four winners will then head to the Group Stage of the 2017 League of Legends World Championships which will be held in Shanghai, China.
A Play-In Draw shall take place on September 12. This will determine which teams will be grouped together and face one another to get a ticket to the Group Stage.
