Challenging Gym Battles
By catching Pokemons or visiting Pokestops you will recieve XP and level up your trainer level. Once you reach level 5, you will be able to challenge gyms. It may be difficult to win at first, but keep on powering up your Pokemon so you can become a gym leader.
By winning you will lower the gyms prestige and will be able to place your own Pokemon at the gym. You will be granted with bonuses for placing your Pokemons at Gyms, so be sure to place your best Pokemon.

Once you have mastered all the things above, you are good to go. Catch Pokemons, power up and evolve them, and challenge gyms so your trainer level is high enough to be able to meet stronger Pokemons and be granted with more useful items.
