Sony: Focus More on Narrative, Less on Hack-n-Slash [God of War 4 / GoW 4]

With E3 2017 (Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017) set to kick off next week (June 13), anticipation continues to grow to a fever pitch as God of War 4 is set to be one of the main attractions in Sony’s appearance at the show this year, and is said to adopt a more open-world and narrative-centered gameplay.

Sony: God of War 4 to Focus on Narrative, Less on Hack-n-Slash

Ahead of Sony’s E3 2017 event (Sony: Playstation E3 Media Showcase) on June 12, it’s been revealed that the latest entry to the acclaimed God of War franchise will be putting more attention to developing the game’s main storyline, and not so much on the hack-n-slash combat. And what’s more, God of War 4 is said to be a big departure from the previous games in the series, featuring a more open-world environment that encourages exploration rather than going through linear levels.

While we’ve been given a good glimpse of Kratos’ and his son Atreus (who makes his debut in the game) braving the dangers of a Nordic realm from the trailer shown at Sony’s E3 2016 show, it’s reasonable to ask what changes and improvements have been made in terms of the game’s awaited gameplay and storyline. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Jim Ryan goes into more detail why next God of War will pursue a different direction from its earlier versions.

“It’s a franchise that has historically acutely under-performed in Europe. Hack and slash games tend to not do so well in Europe, so the narrative this time around will make a big difference. European gamers love narrative games.”

From the statement above, Sony apparently intends to make the series appeal to an even larger video game market, especially its decision to base the game’s atmosphere around Norse mythology. And while we’re not quick to draw similarities between God of War 4 and a certain Elder Scrolls game, it will be interesting how Sony will try and put together a uniquely memorable title that fans and non-fans will enjoy.
