Strategy

  • Brand has good zoning capability thanks to his skills. Try to hit enemies and minions with (W) Pillar of Flame to inflict them with your passive skill Blaze. This would keep your enemies away thereby starving them of experience and gold.
  • (Q) Sear is effective and easier to hit with Rylai’s Crystal Scepter in your arsenal.
  • Brand is very reliant on items for his health and damage both so try to farm as much as you could. Your early game is very weak so don’t be too aggressive.
  • Brand is effective in stunning single targets with his skills. Cast (E) Conflagration on an enemy laner and follow up with (Q) Sear to stun that champion. Finish it off with (W) Pillar of Flame to deal tremendous damage.
  • (R) Pyroclasm bounces from enemy champion to another so release this when they are close together to deal maximum damage.
  • Brand’s skills requires a lot of mana so try to get the Blue Sentinel with the help from your jungler.

Liandry’s Torment Morellonomicon Rylai’s Crystal Scepter

Liandry’s Torment – Liandry’s Torment synergizes well with Brand’s skills, as it increases their damage by applying an additional damage-over-time multiplier based on their enemies’ current health for a short duration.

Morellonomicon – Getting this item makes Brand’s damage to punch through enemies who have strong health regeneration and lifesteal. It gives decent Ability Power and replenishes Brand’s mana for each time he gets a kill or assist.

Rylai’s Crystal Scepter – Having Rylai’s Crystal Scepter gives Brand’s skills to have a slowing effect. This complements well with Liandry’s Torment, as the damage-over-time increases on champions who have movement-impairing debuffs on them such as slows and stuns.

Void Staff – Void Staff further increases Brand’s magic penetration, apart from giving good bonus Ability Power.

Banshee’s Veil Mejai’s Soulstealer Zhonya’s Hourglass
Rod of Ages

Banshee’s Veil – A good defensive item for Brand, Banshee’s Veil gives a protective shield that blocks one enemy crowd control skill. Moreover, this item allows him to survive getting hit with one disable and enables him to re-position himself to safety. Stats-wise, Banshee’s Veil gives good magic resistance and Ability Power which synergizes with Brand’s skills.

Mejai’s Soulstealer – For more aggressive players, getting Mejai’s Soulstealer is an excellent item to pick up. It gives Brand additional Ability Power for each kill or assist he gets, but loses half of it should he die.

Zhonya’s Hourglass – Another staple defensive item for mages, Zhonya’s Hourglass puts Brand into stasis, rendering him immune to any damage for a short duration. Moreover, this item gives good bonus Ability Power and armor.

Rod of Ages – If you are expecting a longer game, you can opt to purchase Rod of Ages. It gives Brand scaling health, mana and Ability Power, for up to 10 charges. However, expect your early to mid-game damage to be subpar, since the bonus Ability Power this item gives will be apparent once you get your second core item.

Playing Against

  • Brand is very hard to 1v1 if you can’t burst him down quickly. His combination of Rylai’s Crystal Scepter and (Q) Sear stun can deal massive amounts of damage.
  • Above all else, do your best to avoid getting hit with any of his skills. (W) Pillar of Flame deals high damage, and when he hits you with (Q) Sear, he will stun you.
  • Brand is near OP during mid and late game, especially when he finally builds Liandry’s Torment and Rylai’s Crystal Septer. However, his early game is subpar at best as he doesn’t have that much damage.
  • His health also comes from his items so he is still fairly squishy. Without his build, Brand won’t be able to do that much damage so engage him early on and try to starve him as much minions as you can. The later he finishes his build the better.
  • A mage champion with superior range like Lux or Xerath can poke and harass Brand from a safe distance
  • During teamfights, don’t stay very close to each other as (R) Pyroclasm bounces from champion to champion

Hard Counters

  • Kassadin – Kassadin specializes in assassinating champions who have limited mobility. He can quickly burst down Brand and get away easily with Riftwalk, Null Sphere and Nether Blade as well as dodge most of his skills.
  • Galio – Galio is exceptionally strong against mages, thanks to his Shield of Durand. Moreover, he can also get close to Brand with Justice Punch and deal significant damage with Winds of War.
  • Zed – Similar to Kassadin, Zed excels in eliminating single targets. He is a highly mobile champion who can burst down Brand with his Death Mark + Shadow Slash + Razor Shuriken combo before Brand can cast his spells.
