Strategy

Top Lane

  • Take note of your Rage Bar at all times. Gnar is strong when he transforms to Mega Gnar, but to do so, he needs to fill up his Rage meter. To do this, attack minions and champions and hit them with your skills. Also, it is imperative that you gauge when you need to transform – it is best to keep your rage meter at least 3/4 full.
  • (Q) Boomerang Throw‘s cooldown is reduced if you catch it. Try to use it in a linear chase to catch it easier. But be reminded that you don’t need to necessary catch it back every time since it can be thrown back at an awkward position leading to possible gank escapes or misplays.
  • Gnar’s (E) Crunch allows him to close in on his enemies and deal massive damage. Use this to your advantage for surprise turnarounds from your mega version.
  • Low hp doesn’t necessarily mean that you should runaway automatically. If your rage bar is full, you again can turnaround the match-up as he gains additional health, magic resistance and attack damage.
  • Gnar is very mobile. Use this to your advantage to dodge spells with cast time and even escape pursuing enemies with your added movement speed from his (W) Hyper and his jumps (E) Hop/Crunch.
  • Be careful in engaging in teamfights when your rage bar is low. This could prove disastrous as your hp will be low and you won’t have access to your CC.
  • As the game progresses, your role in teamfights is to engage and control the opposing team with your slow and stun. Try to position yourself in the center of the fray and disable as much champions as possible.

Core Items
The black cleaver icon Frozen mallet icon Guardian angel icon
The Black Cleaver Frozen Mallet Guardian Angel

The Black Cleaver – The Black Cleaver is Gnar’s main damage item. It gives him bonus Attack Damage, cooldown reduction and has makes all of his physical damage shred his enemies’ armor up to a certain point. This item synergizes well with (W) Hyper‘s passive, (Q) Bommerang Toss / Wallop and (R) Gnar!

Frozen Mallet – Frozen Mallet gives Gnar enables Gnar to stick to his targets whether in lane, ganks or team fights. This item gives good health and Attack Damage stats and an on-hit slow debuff that hinders the enemy’s movement speed. It also allows Gnar to tank some damage when he jumps into the fray or when he starts a clash.

Guardian Angel – Guardian Angel is a good defensive item for Gnar, as he usually gets into the action to set up clashes. This item gives good bonus Attack Damage and decent armor stats, and more importantly, it resurrects Gnar if he receives fatal damage.

Mercury’s Treads The Black Cleaver Frozen Mallet
Guardian angel icon Gargoyle Stoneplate Icom Randuins omen icon
Guardian Angel Gargoyle Stoneplate Randuin’s Omen

Mercury’s Treads – Mercury’s Treads is a great boots upgrade for Gnar, as he is often taking the brunt of enemy skills and crowd control. It gives him some survivability as Mercury’s Treads decreases the duration of slows, stuns and other crowd control effects.

Gargoyle Stoneplate – Gargoyle Stoneplate further increases Gnar’s capacity to soak damage for his team. It gives good armor and magic resistance, and its active skill makes Gnar especially hard to kill when he is in the thick of the team fight and displacing his enemies.

Randuin’s Omen – Randuin’s Omen is a good follow up  defensive item as it gives him bonus health and armor. It also slows the attack speed of enemies who attack him, and has an active skill that slows enemies near Gnar.

Situational Items
Spirit visage icon  Dead mans plate icon Maw of malmoritus icon
Spirit Visage Dead Man’s Plate Maw of Malmortius

Spirit Visage – Spirit Visage is a good defensive option to get for Gnar when opponents rely on dealing magic damage. It gives Gnar good magic resistance and increased health regeneration effects casted by his teammates or his own (i.e. lifesteal, etc.)

Dead Man’s Plate – Dead Man’s Plate is another good follow up item for Gnar after he’s completed his core items. It gives him bonus health and armor, and has an on-hit slow when its wearer has 100 momentum stacks. This helps Gnar chase and stick to his enemies.

Maw of Malmortius – Maw of Malmortius is a decent option to deal with enemy mages. It provides bonus magic resistance and attack damage as well as shield that mitigates magic damage. This will help Gnar survive being bursted down.

Playing Against

  • Gnar’s at his best when his rage bar is full. Most of the time, he will be engaging you when his rage bar is almost full so try to watch out when he’s getting too aggressive as he is about to transform. You can also check his rage bar from time to time to avoid or just  be prepared for Mega Gnar  during laning.
  • Gnar gains huge benefits from Mega Gnar so don’t be too confident in chasing him as he can easily turn the gank around even at low hp when he turns into Mega Gnar.
  • Avoid getting hit with (Q) Boomerang Throw so that you won’t get further harassed by Gnar during the laning phase.

Hard Counter

  • Pantheon – Pantheon has a long range poke with Spear Shot that can easily damage Gnar in the laning phase. Aegis of Zeonia is another ability of Pantheon that can close the gap if Gnar tries to engage in 1v1. A well fed Pantheon has the ability to one shot a Mini Gnar wit just one combo.
  • Irelia – Irelia’s Bladesurge is a good gap closer, considering that Gnar is a ranged champion. Irelia can also disable a Mega Gnar combo with Equilibrium Strike, as it can often be said that a Mega Gnar has more health than Irelia. He can’t also escape Irelia because of Transcendent Blades. In the mid-late game, Irelia outscales Gnar really well and it can be detrimental if Irelia had a really good early game.
  • Fiora – Fiora is a good duelist that can catch Gnar the moment she casts Grand Duelist on him. She can also outsustain him because of the passive and can cast Riposte when he casts Gnar! Fiora wins every trade provided she times her combo effectively and they are of both skill levels.
