Strategy

  • During the laning phase, cast (Q) Barrel Roll onto a location where you can hit the enemy laner as well as the minion wave.
  • The longer you proc (Q) Barrel Roll, the damage and slow it inflicts enemies will increase.
  • Gragas can duel with enemy laners thanks to Happy Hour (passive). You can combo this with (W) Drunken Rage, to boost your auto attack damage for one hit if your lane opponent gets too close.
  • (E) Body Slam is an effective initiating skill when ganking lanes and team fights. Try to hit the enemy team’s carries to isolate them for your team.
  • (E) Body Slam is a great escaping skill if you get caught in the jungle – you can pass through some terrain and walls to avoid being routed.
  • You can also provide lane pressure by starting the duel – lead in with (Q) Barrel Roll and cast (W) Drunken Rage. Then try to hit the enemy with (E) Body Slam to knock your opponent back, leaving him open to your empowered auto attack.
  • (R) Explosive Cask is Gragas’ signature skill that can separate the enemy team’s carries from the rest of their team. Cast it in between the carries or behind them to displace them in a disadvantageous position during clashes.

Cinderhulk Enchantment – The Cinderhulk Enchantment is a staple item for jungle tanks, and Gragas is no exception. It gives him good health stats, allowing him to soak damage for his team while dealing damage thanks to its burning aura around enemies.

Spirit Visage – Spirit Visage synergizes well with Gragas’ Happy Hour (passive). It makes him able to heal damage whenever he casts a skill, which proves to be vital in some situations.

Knight’s Vow – Knight’s Vow further bolsters Gragas’ utility for his team. This item provides damage mitigation for his ally he casts its item skill with. It also gives good armor, health and cooldown reduction stats.

Knight’s Vow Abyssal Mask  Righteous Glory

Ninja Tabi – Ninja Tabi is a standard boots item for Gragas. It gives him durability when he is jungling neutral creeps. It gives decent armor and movement speed, two things he needs when he ganks during the laning phase.

Abyssal Mask – Abyssal Mask provides Gragas with decent magic resistance and bonus health, allowing him to be in the fray during team fights. Its passive also increases the potency of his team’s magic damage.

Righteous Glory – Gragas has good initiating skills to bring the fight to the opposing team. Righteous Glory further increases his initiating and sticking power to enemies. It gives him great armor, health and cooldown reduction stats, and its active skill speeds up his teammates and slows down the first enemy champion or champions he catches up to.

Dead mans plate icon
Dead Man’s Plate

Thornmail – Thornmail is a good item to get if your enemy team comprises of champions who deal auto attack and physical attack damage. It gives nice armor and health stats. This item also redirects damage from opposing sources back to them while inflicting Grievous Wounds, hindering the effectiveness of heals.

Iceborn Gauntlet – Iceborn Gauntlet is a nice item to get if you want your skills to have more damage and utility. Each time you cast a skill, your auto attack will have a small area-of-effect slow, which allows you to stick close to high-priority targets, or let your teammates escape an unwanted clash.

Mercury’s Treads – A good alternative to Ninja Tabi, Mercury’s Treads gives Gragas tanking power against magic damage and crowd control. This item gives decent magic resistance and reduces crowd control effects.

Dead Man’s Plate – Dead Man’s Plate gives Gragas additional sticking power with his initiates. This item gives bonus health and armor, as well as a passive item skill that gives his auto attack a slowing debuff once he reaches 100 stacks of momentum.

Playing Against

  • Do not clump together with your teammates – Gragas’ (R) Explosive Cask will displace your team and leave you susceptible to being routed once his team follows up and isolate your carries.
  • Do not stand near the location of Gragas’ (Q) Barrel Roll. It will deal decent damage and slow you the longer it is fermenting.
  • Be on your toes when you’re facing Gragas one-on-one – his (E) Body Slam + (W) Drunken Rage + auto attack + (Q) Barrel Roll can do significant burst damage to single targets. Gragas can also heal for a short amount whenever he casts a skill thanks to Happy Hour (passive), but it can only be activated every 8 seconds.
  • Gragas is deceptively mobile thanks to (E) Body Slam‘s short cooldown at later levels. It also refreshes its cooldown whenever he hits a unit.
  • During clashes, it is better to focus on Gragas’ allied carries to lessen their damage output, as he can tank a lot of damage for his team.

Hard Counter

  • Yasuo – Yasuo’s Wind Wall renders Gragas’ (Q) Barrel Roll and (R) Explosive Cask useless if he places it in the right position. He can also disrupt Gragas’ initiates with Steel Tempest.
  • Braum – Braum is able to use Unbreakable to block Gragas’ (R) Explosive Cask and (Q) Barrel Roll to mitigate the damage and potential displacement to his team.
