Strategy

  • Nunu thrives in invading and stealing the enemy junglers’ neutral monster camps. Try to steal the high priority buffs such as the Blue Sentinel or Red Brambleback on the opposing player’s jungle to set him back significantly in experience and gold.
  • Use (Q) Consume on neutral monster that deal more damage to quicken your pace in your jungle or when you’re stealing monsters from the enemy jungle.
  • (Q) Consume serves as another Smite – it is a powerful skill to use when taking down high-priority monsters such as Dragons, Rift Herald and Baron Nashor to ensure your team gets the buffs.
  • When initiating ganks, remember to tag the enemy champion with (E) Ice Blast to slow him down and allowing your laner to catch up and follow up with a damaging or crowd control skill.
  • Casting (W) Blood Boil on your allied carry will significantly boost their Attack Speed, increasing their damage output during skirmishes, clashes and when you are taking down objectives.
  • Take note when your Visionary (passive) is active – it allows you to use a skill without using mana. It is recommended that you save it for a free (E) Ice Blast.
  • Be careful when using (R) Absolute Zero – it is a channeling skill that can easily be interrupted by crowd control skills. It is best to use it after most of the enemy team has casted their crowd control skills to get the most out of it.
  • Use the brush to your advantage – place wards at strategic locations to catch where your enemies are going. You can cast the full duration of (R) Absolute Zero inside brushes when enemies get close for massive damage and slow them down for your team.

Core Items
Locket of the iron solari icon Warmogs armor icon
Tracker’s Knife Enchantment: Cinderhulk Locket of the Iron Solari Warmog’s Armor

Tracker’s Knife Enchantment: Cinderhulk – Since Nunu is exceptional when it comes to disrupting the enemy jungler’s territory, Tracker’s Knife is an excellent jungling item for him. It gives him a ward which Nunu can use to scout where the enemy jungler might be, and disrupt his pathing either by smite-stealing his objectives or raiding the other creep camps.

Locket of the Iron Solari – Nunu is usually in the thick of team fights, slowing enemies and buffing allies. Locket of the Iron Solari further bolsters his utility, as this item gives Nunu’s allied champions a protective shield.

Warmog’s Armor – An excellent item for Nunu, Warmog’s Armor gives massive bonus health, health regeneration and cooldown reduction. This allows Nunu to survive being in the fray during clashes.

Warmog’s Armor Knight’s Vow Locket of the Iron Solari

Ninja Tabi – A standard boots upgrade, Ninja Tabi is a good choice to deal with enemy teams who deal predominantly physical damage.

Frozen Heart – This item gives him bonus armor and cooldown reduction, two things he needs to soak damage and keep a single target slowed for his allies to finish off.

Knight’s Vow – Getting this item increases his supportive abilities. Knight’s Vow grants allows him to tank some damage for one allied champion he casts the active item skill on.

Situational Items

Righteous Glory Mercury Treads Gargoyle Stoneplate
Thornmail icon Spirit visage icon Banshee's Veil Icon
Thornmail  Spirit Visage Banshee’s Veil

Righteous Glory – An offensive item, Righteous Glory helps him and his team rush enemies who are caught off guard. This item gives good armor and bonus health stats, as well as a great active skill that speeds up Nunu and any nearby allied champions, and slows down enemy champions who are too close to Nunu after a certain duration.

Mercury Treads – An alternative to Ninja Tabi, Mercury Treads gives its user bonus magic resistance and decreases enemy crowd control effects.

Gargoyle Stoneplate – This item further bolsters his survivability and tankiness. Gargoyle Stoneplate gives bonus armor and magic resistance, as well as an active skill that significantly increases his health when he is near two or more enemy champions for a short duration.

Thornmail – For enemy ADCs, Top and Junglers who rely on auto attacks to deal damage, getting Thornmail is a good choice. It gives him bonus armor and reflects enemy basic attacks while inflicting them with Grievous Wounds.

Spirit Visage – This item gives Nunu stronger heals from any source, allowing him even more tankiness and ability to soak damage for his team.

Banshee’s Veil – Since Nunu’s (R) Absolute Zero requires him to channel for a long time to get the maximum damage, investing in Banshee’s Veil is a wise option. It provides Nunu with a spell shield that blocks one damaging and crowd control skill, allowing him to have more time to get close to the full channel of his ultimate.

Playing Against

  • Coordinate with your team to guard your side of the jungle and provide vision so that you can catch where Nunu might invade and potentially disrupt your jungling path.
  • During the laning phase, it is best to ward choke points and paths Nunu might take to gank so that you can preempt your escape.
  • When you catch him in the jungle, be sure that there are no enemy minions or neutral monsters near him – he can quickly heal lost health by using (Q) Consume on minions and stack charges for a free (E) Ice Blast.
  • If you feel that you cannot duel with Nunu when you encounter him, it is best to back away – he can deal significant damage with (E) Ice Blast and stick to you until his help arrives and get a free kill.
  • (R) Absolute Zero can be canceled by crowd control skills to mitigate its damage. In the event that your team cannot cancel (R) Absolute Zero channeling, get out of its area as quickly as possible.
  • Be alert when your movement speed suddenly slows down when you’re near brushes – it means that  you are in the (R) Absolute Zero’s radius and about to deal massive damage. When this happens, steer clear of brushes or thwart such tactics with proper ward placement.

Hard Counter

  • Morgana – Morgana’s Black Shield negates the slow effect and damage of Nunu’s Ice Blast and Absolute Zero, so long as the shield persists.
  • Soraka – Soraka can effectively stop the channel of  Absolute Zero, thanks to Equinox. She can also slow down Nunu with Starcall, and heal her ally with Astral Infusion when Nunu uses his Ice Blast.
  • Taric – Taric can heal the damage of Ice Blast with Starlight’s Touch, as well as stun the channeling of Absolute Zero with Dazzle. If Nunu manages to channel his Absolute Zero, Taric can counteract with Radiance to ensure his teammates are immune to damage.
  • Cassiopeia – Cassiopeia can effectively slow down Nunu should he decides to charge in with Miasma. She is able to stop Absolute Zero channeling with Petrifying Gaze.
  • Riven – Riven is a highly mobile champion who has good distance-covering skills to either keep away from Nunu or chase him down. Riven also has good stuns to effectively thwart Absolute Zero.
