That said, there were a couple of takeaways worth noting during an exciting Day 2 of the Worlds Group Stage:
SKT and Longzhu Show Mettle in Group Stage
LCK powerhouses SKT T1 and Longzhu Gaming improved to 2-0 by defeating their respective opponents, EDward Gaming and GIGABYTE Marines.
EDward Gaming started the match strongly and pushed to finish the game early, even having a commanding lead in terms of kills. However, SKT managed to weather EDward Gaming’s pressure and took key objectives and win key clashes during the late-game phase on their way to a decisive win.
Longzhu Gaming also illustrated why they are LCK’s first seed by handily defeating GIGABYTE Marines. Prior to their match, GIGABYTE Marines informed that they’ll unveil an even wilder team composition against Longzhu Gaming. Their plan was in the form of playing Mordekaiser, a champion that is out of the meta game, and another lane swap.
However, Longzhu Gaming was quick to quell GIGABYTE Marines’ unique team composition with the necessary adjustments. This led to Archie’s Mordekaiser incurring a number quick deaths in the early game, and eventually, Longzhu Gaming bulldozed GIGABYTE Marines 17-2.
NA LCS Teams Improve Standings
Immortals, Cloud 9 and Team Solo Mid also impressed during the second day in the Group Stage.
Team Solo Mid won a hard-fought match against Flash Wolves in the first match of Day 2. Their game lasted for 54 minutes, where Flash Wolves had the lead in the early portion of the match. However, TSM clawed back, stealing crucial objectives down the stretch and solidifying their comeback with a 5-man Gnar ultimate from Hauntzer and the game.
Immortals also fared well against EU LCS’ Fnatic. For the better part of the match, Fnatic held the lead, but couldn’t close out for the win. This led Immortal to a secure crucial Baron control late in the game and eventually snatching the win from Rekkles and company.
Finally, Cloud 9 was victorious against AHQ in their encounter. Coming off a loss to SKT, Cloud 9 returned to their winning form, besting the opposing team from LMS and net their first win. Led by Jensen and Sneaky, Cloud 9 was able to secure the entirety of the match and eventually the game.
Team WE tops Misfits
Capping off the Group Stage Day 2 games, Team WE toppled Misfits in short order during their matchup. Led by Xiye’s LeBlanc, which saw him get an impressive 6-0 KDA, the hometown club easily besting the EU LCS team. This nets Team WE their first win after seemingly struggling during the Play-Ins.
