Samsung Galaxy’s League of Legends team asserted dominance over Worlds-favorite Longzhu Gaming after sweeping them in a best-of-five series on the first day of the League of Legends Worlds quarterfinals held in Wuhan, China.
The League of Legends Champions Korea’s third seed defeated Longzhu in what could be known as the greatest upset so far in the Worlds main stage. Further, it was not just a win for Samsung Galaxy, but a stomp as they dominated in all three games. Two of the analysts desk predicted that Longzhu would sweep the quarterfinals while one said that Longzhu would only give one win for Samsung Galaxy.
Game 1: Samsung Galaxy’s Wombo Combo Draft
SSG had a very team-oriented composition with Kennen, Sejuani, and Rakan. LZ opted for strong late game champions such as Jax in the top lane and Jarvan IV in the jungle.
It was a close in the early to mid game as both teams secured objectives and a few kills. Longzhu’s Bdd and Khan carried most of the team with their kills and lane pressure. However, at the 37th minute mark, SSG was able to kill Gorilla and Khan to give them an easy objective on Baron Nashor. SSG pushed towards the Nexus and never looked back, winning the first game of the series.
Game 2: Crown’s Redemption
It was in the second game that SSG showed their true strength with Crown leading the charge. Crown’s Taliyah was on point with a 9/1/7 outing. Her only death was at the 3-minute mark. She also garnered a triple kill in the mid game while getting a quadra kill in the final minutes of the game.
Longzhu was not able to get an advantage throughout the duration of the game. Pray’s Varus never showed any signs of life as he finished 0/4/2. Khan was also unable to carry Longzhu, finishing the game as Cho’Gath with only 2/1/1.
Game 3: The Finishing Blow
SSG continued to pull away from Longzhu and finish the series for good. Crown took out his signature Lissandra and CuVee picked Shen again after a successful bout with him the previous game.
SSG Ruler was the star for SSG this match as he went H.A.M. against Longzhu with a 5/0/4 score. The duo of Sejuani and Crown was enough to initiate good team fights in favor of SSG.
Longzhu was not able to get a grip in the whole game, as SSG had as much as a 10k advantage in gold. Tristana picked up a Quadra kill in the final moments to seal the deal for Samsung Galaxy, 3-0.
With the win, SSG is now heading to the semi-finals. The winner of Team WE and Cloud9 will face SSG on Sunday, Oct. 20. SKT T1 will face Europe’s Misfit Gaming today as of writing.
