This is a strategy guide for Roller, a weapon in Splatoon 2. This page contains information of basic strategy and techniques, recommended weapons and gears, and countermeasures against other weapons when using a Roller.

About Roller

Roller’s Characteristic

  • Superior in Painting
  • Unlike other weapons, Roller lets you paint and move quickly. Its painting performance is far better than all the other weapons. It is a popular weapon in Turf War, and beginners can aim for first place with this.

  • Painting attack and Ink-flinging attack
  • You can one hit a enemy simply by running over them with a Roller. However, because it is attacking with the Ink being painted on the ground,
it will not do any damage when it hits an enemy mid-air or when going over a fence. It can also deal damage to the enemy by flinging Ink. If performed in mid-air, the Ink’s range will increase.

  • Brushes
  • Brushes are a type of Roller, but has its own unique characteristic. Unlike a Roller which is waved vertically, a Brush is waved horizontally.

Strategy

  • Use Ink fling attack
  • In high rank matches, it becomes more and more difficult to run over enemies. Therefore it is important for you to be able to fling Ink. By covering Roller’s weakness which is its range, you will surely play an active part even in high rank matches.

  • Practice Flanking
  • When using a Roller you often end up painting even when your teams territory is bigger. But rather than painting, flanking is much more effective when your team has the advantage. Because it can one hit enemies, it has the capability to wipe out the enemy team by flanking.

Techniques

  • Make use of vertical and horizontal swing
  • If you swing a Roller on the ground the ink spreads widely, and if you swing it in mid-air the ink will fly further. These swings are called horizontal swing and vertical swing, and being good at using a Roller depends on how well you can use these swings.

  • Defeat enemies above you
  • The Ink flung from a Roller launched above your head. This means that you don’t have to expose your body when aiming for a enemy above you, and will be able to unilaterally splat enemies.

Recommended Weapons

  • Dynamo Roller
  • Dynamo Roller is a high power Roller that has a wide painting range, and has superior painting performance when used with the Sprinklers. The special gauge can easily be filled up, and has the most range among all Roller’s, but its vertical swing performance it worth considering.

  • Permanent Inkbrush
  • Permanent Inkbrush is a variant of Inkbrush with a Splat Bomb as its Sub Weapon. Inkbrush is only effective in short range, but the Permanent Inkbrush is effective in short range as well as mid and long range. Because its Special Weapon is Kraken, it will be able to counter enemies ambush.

Recommended Gear

  • Ninja Squid
  • Ink Saver (Main)
  • Ink Resistance Up
  • Because you will have to approach the enemy, so Ninja Squid is effective. Ink Saver (Main) will improve your endurance and painting performance. Also, since Roller is bad at painting the user’s feet, Ink Resistance Up will be helpful when a enemy paints below you.

Countermeasures Against Other Weapons

Splat Dualies

Even when considering Splat Dualies fire rate, the short range performance is the same. The problem is whether your aim can keep up against Splat Dualies roll.

Shooter

The Shooter will have the advantage if it has decent range. Even if the enemy’s Shooter has short range, you might still lose id its has high fire rate. In any case, you would want to avoid going head on against a Shooter.

Charger

The Roller will have the advantage if near the Charger. But you don’t have to forcibly fight against it if you can’t ambush or flank around.

Rollers・Brushes

If you spot an enemy get ready to fling Ink at them instead of rolling over them since rolling over them might end up in a standoff. The outcome of the battle depends on how well you can fling Ink.

Slosher

If you are good at using vertical swing, you will most likely have advantage over Slosher. But if the Slosher dodges your Ink, you will be in danger. If you miss a vertical swing in min-range combat, falling back is better than o continue attacking.

Splatling

If going face on the Splatling will have the advantage. Flank the enemy and attacking from behind would be the most effective tactic.
