Super Mario Run includes six playable characters from the Mario universe, each with their own unique abilities. This allows players to experience the game a little differently by harnessing each character’s advantage over the others.
Mario
The series’ main hero, Mario is the most basic character on the playable roster. Since he’s the only character you can use at the start of the game, you’ll learn most of the game’s mechanics and limitations based on Mario’s capabilities.
Luigi
The taller younger brother of Mario, Luigi still sports that unmistakable bright green plumber outfit like his past appearances in other Mario games. To unlock Luigi, you need to build his house in Kingdom Builder Mode by obtaining 150 Green Toads and 150 Purple Toads in Toad Rally Mode.In Super Mario Run, Luigi can perform a double vertical jump. This makes it easier to reach higher places in certain levels.
Yoshi
The Mario series’ lovable anthropomorphic dinosaur. While he can’t really gobble up Koopas in Super Mario Run, Yoshi can extend the duration of his horizontal jumps for a short period (which counts as a sort of ‘double’ jump), making him good for getting across very wide gaps found in certain levels. He can be unlocked by building his house in Kingdom Builder Mode after you collect 30 red toads and 30 yellow toads in Toad Rally Mode.
Toad
That little guy who’s always telling you that “the princess is in another castle” makes a playable appearance in Super Mario Run. Toad runs faster than all of other playable characters (save for Toadette, who runs just as fast), though he can’t use magic mushrooms and will bubble immediately after being hit just once. To play as Toad, you need to link a Nintendo account in Kingdom Builder Mode.
Toadette
What’s Toad without his dear old pink racing buddy? Toadette is just as fast as Toad, and has a rather interesting ability: she impresses more toads in Toad Rally than any other playable character in the game. A natural girl charm, maybe? To unlock Toadette, you have to build her house in Kingdom Builder Mode by collecting 200 yellow toads and 200 purple toads in Toad Rally Mode.
Peach
The princess with a penchant for being kidnapped by monstrous turtle kings is also a playable character in Super Mario Run. As a nod to her appearances in previous Mario games, Peach’s dainty dress (and bulbous skirt) allow her to float or glide for a short period when jumping or falling. Peach is unlocked by completing World Tour Mode after rescuing her from Bowser’s castle.
