Basic attacks and all abilities refresh Research.ACTIVE: Vel’Koz channels a ray of energy that follows the cursor for 2.5 seconds, dealing Magic Damage up to a total of 450/625/800 (+125% Ability Power) and slowing units hit by 20%.Enemies that stay in the beam will periodically gain Organic Deconstruction stacks. Deals True Damage instead of Magic against Researched units.

Strategy

  • During the laning phase, you can use your Void Rift to farm minions and harass your enemy champion simultaneously
  • All Vel’Koz abilities are skill-based, which is why you need to have good positioning and predicting skills to hit your opponents and maximize your damage output.
  • Shoot your (Q) Plasma Fission diagonally and split it to increase maximum range
  • Be wary when using  (R) Life Form Disintegration Ray. Stuns, Snares, and other forms of Crowd Controls can interrupt your Ultimate.
  • Vel’Koz’s strength comes from his skills being spammable (low Cooldown). However, he is very immobile and vulnerable in close ranges and ganks so be sure to ward and be cautious in going in enemy territory.
  • Make sure to use your other skills first before (R) Life Form Disintegration Ray so it deals true damage instead of magic damage from Organic Deconstruction (passive).

Core Items
Morellonomicon icon Ludens echo icon Sorcerer's Shoes icon
Morellonomicon Luden’s Echo Sorcerer’s Shoes
Morellonomicon – Morellonomicon is a great first core item for Vel’Koz as it gives him the necessary stats to be relevant in the laning phase. The cooldown reduction it gives is also very important especially if you are going to chain your combos to ensure a sure kill.
Luden’s Echo – This item grants Vel’Koz more movement speed and ability power which is very helpful since he doesn’t have much mobility and escape abilities. The passive also allows him to deal more damage in an area, which Vel’Koz can greatly benefit with.
Sorcerer’s Shoes – Sorcerer’s Shoes increases his magic penetration. This boots is the better option compared to other boots which gives him defensive stats and movement speed which does not equate to Vel’Koz as you only need good positioning to be effective as Vel’Koz.

Ludens echo icon rabadons deathcap icon
Luden’s Echo Rabadon’s Deathcap Zhonya’s Hourglass
Hextech GLP-800 – This item gives you a ton of stats that are beneficial for Vel’Koz. What makes this item viable for Vel’Koz is the active that damages your enemies in front of you in a cone while slowing them for 65%. The active allows you to hit your abilities much better when they are applied the slow.
Rabadons Deathcap – Rabadon’s Deathcap further improves his ability power, making him a one-shot AP caster against squishy ADCs and supports. This item is essential to almost all AP mid laners, as the ability power it provides greatly benefits the damage of his abilities.
Zhonya’s Hourglass – Zhonya’s Hourglass is a great end item for Vel’Koz as it provides defensive stats and the passive is very helpful in team fights and skirmishes when you are in the middle of the fray. This gives you more time to reposition yourself or even avoid deadly ultimates and abilities.
Situational Items
Mejais stoulstealer icon Banshee's Veil Icon
Void Staff Mejai’s Soulstealer Banshee’s Veil

Void Staff – Void Staff is a great item if the enemy has a lot of magic resistance and your skills don’t seem to damage the enemies anymore.

Mejai’s Soulstealer – Mejai’s Soulstealer is a high risk, high reward item that can only be very effective if you are very far ahead in the game. This item gives immense power spike when you have fully stacked the item as early as possible.

Banshee’s Veil – Banshee’s Veil is a great item if the enemy AP has a strong crowd control or initiation and you are always getting focused in team fights. It can also be a good item against Blitzcrank or Thresh who has abilities that can catch you off guard and get you killed easily.

Playing Against

  • Vel’Koz can prove very dangerous during teamfights and clashes so try to focus on him first
  • He has low mobility and vulnerable to ganks
  • Life Form Disintegration Ray can be interrupted by stuns, silences, and knockups
  • Champions who have dashes and teleports (ie. Zed, Ezreal, Katarina) or have strong pokes (ie. Zed, Fizz, Yasuo) can easily delete Vel’Koz as he doesn’t have the capacity to outrun them
  • Try to avoid as much attack from Vel’Koz as you could as even the auto-attacks stacks Vel’Koz’s Organic Deconstruction

Hard Counters

Fizz – Fizz can dodge most of Vel’Koz skill shots with Playful/Trickster and Urchin Strike. Fizz also has the ability to easily catch Vel’Koz with Chum the Waters, making him vulnerable to Fizz’s combo. This is a very hard matchup for Vel’Koz that requires the participation of your jungler all the time to try and outplay Fizz in the laning phase.

Leblanc – Leblanc is also another champion that can jump from one point to another, giving Vel’Koz a hard time landing his skill shots. Leblanc is also one of the more stronger AP mid laner that can kill instantly a squishy target once she catches you with Ethereal Chains.

Ahri – Ahri is also another champion that can traverse the lane towards Vel’Koz with ease. Spirit Dash is a very strong when initiating Vel’Koz, as Vel’Koz will have a hard time aiming his ultimate and Tectonic Destruction. Vel’Koz will pretty much die once Ahri hits Charm and combos him.
