Strategy
- Xerath has high range so you can keep away from enemy champs during the laning phase
- Your skills are excellent both for farming minions and harassing your enemy champions. By constantly using skills, you can keep away your enemies from minion waves.
- Always practice hitting your Xerath abilities on champions. For example, remember not to overcharge your (Q) Arcanopulse as it doesn’t increase your damage just range. Unless you really need the range, don’t waste the second charging it
- Use your (W) Eye of Destruction to slow your enemies. Once they are slowed, hit your intended target with (E) Shocking Orb to stun him. Your (Q) Arcanopulse and (R) Rite of the Arcane will do the rest of the job. During early game, this burst of skills can easily delete your enemy
- Save your (E) Shocking Orb as you can use this on ganking enemies and escape

Core Items | ||

Morellonomicon | Sorcerer’s Shoes | Luden’s Echo |
Morellonomicon – Rushing Morellonomicon as your first core is a great idea, as the extra mana and cooldown reduction allows you to spam your abilities while losing as little mana as possible.
Sorcerer’s Shoes – Sorcerer’s Shoes is the perfect boots for Xerath as it increases his offensive power in the game.
Luden’s Echo – Luden’s Echo grants you ability power and movement speed which Xerath also needs in the laning phase. Luden’s Echo can also be your first build if you are somewhat confident in hitting the enemy or if they have little or no mobility.

Rabadon’s Deathcap | Void Staff | Rylai’s Crystal Scepter |
Rabadon’s Deathcap – Rabadon’s Deathcap further improves your ability power. The extra and amplified ability power makes Xerath a one-shot
Void Staff – Void Staff increases the magic penetration of Xerath, making him very powerful even against enemy champions who have stacked a lot of magic resistance items.
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter – This item makes Xerath lang his abilities easier since it slows the movement speed of enemies when you hit them with an ability. This is very useful especially when you are sniping a target from long range with (R) Rite of the Arcane.
Situational Items | ||
---|---|---|
Banshee’s Veil | Liandry’s Torment | Zhonya’s Hourglass |
Rod of Ages |
Banshee’s Veil – Get this item if the enemy team has a lot of disables that can set you up for a perfect kill. This item against a Blitzcrank, Thresh, or any champion with a game-changing disable.
Liandry’s Torment – Liandry’s Torment is also another good alternative if the enemy has a lot of tanks and a simple void staff won’t do the trick. This item can increase your one-hit potential, melting carries faster in the late game.
Zhonya’s Hourglass – Zhonya’s Hourglass can provide assistance in the game when you the enemy team keeps focusing you in team fights. The active of this item turns you invulnerable for a few seconds,
Rod of Ages – Rod of Ages is a very situational item build for Xerath. The item takes a lot of time to get the full effect. On the other hand, this item provides a lot of mana and ability power, and health.
Playing Against
- He is also reliant on mana so he would need to auto attack minions to harvest more mana.
- Avoid getting hit by (Q) Arcanopulse, (W) Eye of Destruction, (R) Rite of the Arcane and (E) Shocking Orb.
- One way to dodge a Xerath ult is to move erratically when he casts it on you. You have to dodge three times before his ult subsides.
- Xerath targets locations instead of champions. With a highly mobile champion, you can easily avoid his skills.
- Xerath is purely magic damage so build items with magic resist.
- His weakness is hard engaging as he has low mobility and is very squishy.
Hard Counters
- Karthus – Karthus has a pretty similar kit to Xerath that requires a lot of precision to land the skill shots. The only problem is that Karthus has a much more better damage output compared to Xerath. (R) Requiem is also a very painful ability that can kill Xerath wherever he goes, even during the chanelling of his ultimate (R) Rite of the Arcane.
- Zyra – Zyra is a great champion that excels at flanking his enemies and outmanuevering them with her seeds. She has abilties such as (E) Grasping Roots and (R) Stranglethorns that can catch an immobile Xerath.
- Anivia – Anivia has the ability to cancel the chanelling of Xerath’s Ultimate. She also has abilities such as (W) Crystallize or (R) Glacial Storm that works well against champions who have no mobility such as Xerath.
