Strategy
Amumu is typically a Jungler Champion. Click here to view our Jungler Champion Strategy Guide.
- Amumu is a tanky jungler who excels in ganking lanes, initiating team fights and dealing area-of-effect damage and crowd control to opposing champions. His (Q) Bandage Toss is a key skill he uses when ganking lanes.
- When ganking lanes, make sure your (Q) Bandage Toss hits the enemy champion in order for your ally to follow up on the damage.
- Make sure to use your skills in the jungle wisely. While (W) Despair and (E) Tantrum are good skills to kill jungle monsters, reckless use of his skills can render him mana-less. Therefore, it is best to plan your jungle path correctly to conserve and maximize mana for ganks and team fights.
- When using (R) Curse of the Sad Mummy, try to capture as many enemy champions as possible, preferably, the enemy carries and squishy targets. The duration of his ultimate is usually enough for your teammates to take out the enemy carries. With this in mind, remember to communicate with your team when you’re planning to initiate a team fight – proper placing of your team is crucial to ensure a successful engage.
- During team fights, remember to turn (W) Despair on. It greatly complements (R) Curse of the Sad Mummy, and it’s his follow up sustained damage after his initial skills.

Stalker’s Blade Enhancement: Cinderhulk | Gargoyle Stoneplate | Abyssal Mask |
Mercury Boots | Randuin’s Omen |
This item path focuses on Amumu being an initiator in team fights. AP Amumu is somewhat viable in some situations. However, he shines the most when he is the frontliner of a team.
Stalker’s Blade: Cinderhulk – Cinderhulk is the essential jungle item for Amumu. The immolate aura deals damage to enemies nearby that synergize well with (W) Despair. Furthermore, this item allows Amumu to soak damage during team fights and acquiring objectives.
Abyssal Mask – Abyssal Mask grants the user health, magic resistance, mana, and cooldown reduction. These stats are very crucial for Amumu since he relies on his skills and constant mana to deal damage to his enemies. Moreover, the passive also helps Amumu in dealing more damage with (W) Despair and (E) Tantrum since enemies take more magic damage with this item.
Gargoyle Stoneplate – Gargoyle Stoneplate makes Amumu a scary initator and frontline because of the defensive stats this item brings. The Metallicize active also makes him more tanky, enabling him to stick to enemies and deal constant amount of damage while applying crowd control and constant damage on them.

Stalker’s Blade Enhancement: Cinderhulk | Gargoyle Stoneplate | Randuin’s Omen |
Mercury Boots | Abyssal Mask | Locket of the Iron Solari |
Randuin’s Omen – The active on this item compliments Amumu well, since he needs to be constantly near an enemy to deal damage. Moreover, this item slows enemies in a large AoE, decreasing their movement speed. This is better if the enemy has a lot of mobility since this item can make up for it.
Locket of the Iron Solari – This item increases your survivability and team fight presence. The magic resistance and armor it gives also helps Amumu in taking in more damage for the team. More importantly, its shielding provides further survivability for your team.

Rylai’s Crystal Scepter | Liandry’s Torment | Void Staff |
Rod of Ages | Rabadon’s Deathcap | Zeke’s Convergence |
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter – Amumu deals area-of-effect magic damage, and having Rylai’s Crystal Scepter greatly complements his kit. Having this item ensures your skills have a slow debuff whenever you hit enemies with your skills, allowing your team to catch and take out any stragglers.
Liandry’s Torment – This item, combined with Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, ensures your team fights and initiates will hurt the opposing team. Liandry’s Torment deals bonus magic damage for every spell damage you inflict on enemies. This bonus damage is doubled against movement-impaired units. Hitting the enemy team with a (R) Curse of the Sad Mummy and following it up with (W) Despair often results with a majority of the opposing team eliminated.
Void Staff – Void Staff amplifies all of Amumu’s spells against opponents. Along with the AP boost, enemies caught in Amumu’s skills when he has a Void Staff will have 35% of their magic resistance negated, leaving them susceptible to follow spells from teammates.
Rod of Ages – This item boosts Amumu’s health, mana and AP attributes, but he needs to reach this item’s stacks. However, once you reach full stacks, his damage and tankiness allows him to contribute more during team fights. This can be used for players who foresee a longer game.
Rabadon’s Deathcap – This item provides a significant AP steroid boost for Amumu, increasing his skills’ damage and potency for single and multiple targets.
Zeke’s Convergence – This item offers nice stats for armor and mana. Utilizing this item’s active spell during clashes amplifies the damage of your team, leading you to take out priority targets.
Playing Against
- Amumu is highly dependent on his skills and mana regeneration. Usually he starts his jungle path at the Blue Sentinel camp. Coordinate with your team to disrupt and steal his Blue Buff, as this effectively delays his jungle route.
- Place wards on blind areas in your lane. Usually, Amumu starts to roam by level 3, opting to get a quick kill for his team. Having wards in strategic places minimizes the risk of being ganked.
- Amumu players always look for the right time to hit their (Q) Bandage Toss. Do your best to lure him into using this skill and not let it tag you so that you get a small window for counterattack. Consequently, if you get hit with (Q) Bandage Toss, do your best to seek assistance from your team.
- Spread out when you’re engaging for a clash. His (R) Curse of the Sad Mummy is oftentimes a game-changer: if he roots most of your team, chances are they will be getting an Ace.
- Check what items Amumu is building. While naturally tanky, some players opt to build him as an AP Burst Jungler who can deal tremendous damage at the expense of being somewhat squishy. Once you notice whether he is building tanky or burst, you can then adjust your item paths accordingly to counter him.
Hard Counter
- Shyvana – First off, we have Shyvana. She clears the jungle quick, and can mess up Amumu’s Jungle path by either killing some Neutral Camps, robbing Amumu of experience and gold. Besides that, she is also more than able to disrupt his jungle path and kill him in the early game.
- Lee Sin– Secondly, we have Lee Sin. His ultimate, Dragon’s Rage, can displace Amumu away from team fights, leaving his teammates open for assassins and ADCs. Furthermore, during the jungling phase, he can also mess Amumu’s jungle path by stealing Neutral Camps and even killing Amumu.
- Shaco – Shaco specializes in subterfuge, often hiding in brushes until an unwary champion enters in his playground. Amumu is highly susceptible to being killed when engaging Neutral Camps and not alert enough of Shaco’s presence. Moreover, this champ is highly mobile, rendering Amumu’s (Q) Bandage Toss useless, especially in the jungle.
- Nunu– Finally, we have Nunu. Similar to the other junglers above, Nunu excels in disrupting his enemy’s jungle path by stealing Neutral Camps. Seeing that Amumu’s power spike happens when he reaches level 6, delaying it will severely hamper his effectiveness.
