What is Metal Gear Solid (MGS1)?

A Revolutionary Title in the Stealth Action Genre

Metal Gear Solid (MGS1) - Game Overview

Metal Gear Solid (MGS1) is a stealth action game released for the Playstation (PS1) on September 3, 1998. Owing to its ground-breaking gameplay, pioneering cinematics, and deep narrative, the game received widespread critical acclaim and has become a gold standard in action games.

Metal Gear Solid is mistakenly thought to be the first game in the franchise, despite the Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 being released for the MSX2 home computer in 1987 and 1990 respectively. This misconception is likely due to the fact that Metal Gear Solid is the first title in the series to make a big impact to a wide audience or is simply the first game Metal Gear game that most fans have played.

As part of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1, Metal Gear Solid makes it way into modern platforms together with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Metal Gear Solid gameplay focuses on stealth, encouraging players to infiltrate mission areas undetected and without having to force their way through enemies.

Metal Gear Solid (MGS1) - Walkthrough 2

A variety of weapons can be used to dispatch enemy soldiers, though other foes may be alerted by the sound of gunshots or explosions. This means that there is always a sense of tension on how players should proceed throughout each obstacle the game presents to them.

Epoch-making nuclear hijacking

“In 2005, the nuclear weapons facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska falls under the control of special forces unit FOXHOUND, who is in search of Big Boss’s corpse. They issue an ultimatum: if their demands aren’t met within 24 hours, they will launch a nuclear strike.
Former FOXHOUND member Solid Snake, shocked to learn the terrorist plot is spearheaded by a similar-looking Liquid Snake, is called upon to infiltrate the island.
It’s an epic tale of genes, destiny, conspiracy, and treachery.”
