How to Beat Psycho Mantis Guide for Metal Gear Solid (MGS1)

Psycho Mantis Boss Guide (Strategy)

1	Stun Meryl with a Stun Grenade.
2	Connect the controller to 2P (original Playstation version) or use the alternate countermeasure (0ther versions).
3	Equip Thermal Goggles to reveal Psycho Mantis’ location.
4	Evade Pyscho Mantis’ telekinesis attack by crawling (can avoid most objects except for the paintings).

Metal Gear Solid (MGS1) Boss List

Stun Meryl with a Stun Grenade.

Meryl must be stunned out of Psycho Mantis’ mind control.

You can also throw Meryl to stun her, but using Stun Grenades is quicker.

Connect the controller to 2P (original Playstation version only).

You cannot attack Psycho Mantis if your controller is connected to Player 1 (1P) port because of his mind-reading ability.

By connecting the controller to Player 2 (2P) port, Psycho Mantis will not be able to read Snake’s mind. This will allow you to damage him.

Alternate countermeasure (other versions).

Another way to damage Psycho Mantis during his mind-reading phase is to call Col. Campbell over and over until he mentions to you of connecting the your controller to the 2P port. Afterwards, you must kill yourself on purpose using an explosive weapon to restart the fight.

When the fight begins again, call Col. Campbell again. He will tell you a different way to attack Psycho Mantis which is to destroy the statues on the left and right side of the room. Doing so lets you attack the boss without having to connect your controller to the 2P port.

Equip Thermal Goggles to reveal Psycho Mantis’ location.

Psycho Mantis’ stealth camouflage can be nullified by equipping Thermal Goggles.

Evade Pyscho Mantis’ telekinesis attack by crawling (can avoid most objects except for the paintings).

You can dodge Psycho Mantis’ telekinesis attack (when he starts hurling pots and chairs at you) by crawling.

You will, however, not be able to avoid the spinning paintings this way. You need to run sideways to dodge these.
