The Evil Within 2 Gameplay Demo
The Evil Within was Shinji Mikami’s return to “survival” horror–a gory mishmash of Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill. (Do you see the Keeper, that Safe-head monster? Pyramid head indeed!) The old Evil came out last 2014, but a sequel was recently announced. Set to be released this October 13, 2017 to a worldwide audience and October 19 for Japanese players, the game is set to be the continuation of the original story.
Well, the developers of the Evil Within 2 released a developer demo for audiences to enjoy. You can check it out here:

What we know so far
Difficulty Modes
- You can select from three difficulty modes: Casual, Survival, and Nightmare.
- Casual is “slightly less punishing,” with less deaths. This doesn’t mean that it won’t have difficulties.
- Survival is “for those who want the basics of a Survival horror experience. Keep an eye out on your resources, approach situations with caution, and don’t get overconfident.”
- Nightmare is punishing, rebalanced, and re-arranged. It’s for people who are familiar with survival horror games.
- Upon defeating the game, there will be a new Difficulty mode that is different from the Akuma mode from the original game.
- Aim Assist can be enabled or disabled in-game. This means that difficulty of combat will decrease significantly. The game text oddly says that experienced players should set it to DISABLED, for some reason.
Some Story and Assorted Details
- There is a narration around 1:48 to give context to the player. Sebastian Castellanos, the detective from the first game, has to go back to STEM–a kind of collective vulcan mind-meld.
- Chapter 2 is featured in the demo, named “Something Not Quite Right.” In the sense of story progression…that kinda make sense.
- Castellanos has to search for the Mobius Search Team members within STEM for a lead on finding Lily.
- At 4:40 you’ll meet your first implacable man-type enemy (think: Nemesis or even Pyramid Head): a multi-armed woman with a power saw in one limb (similar to the same enemy from the first game). This chapter also starts with a (now traditional), set piece chase level.
- “The Photographer” appears around 6:55.
- The chainsaw lady cuts Castellanos in half in gory glory around 7:14. Gore will be very, very featured in this game. Quicksaving before the sequence can be seen at 7:26.
- Automatic Health Regeneration can be seen at 8:39. Regen can only recover a small portion of health from the beginning. This might be upgradeable later.
- The haunted’s heads can regenerate, as is seen around 14:30.
- Crafting can be seen at 25:54.
Impressions
What do you think? So far, it’s pretty much Resident Evil in a different context. You have a lot of tropes that return from Re4-onwards. I think the “survival” and “horror” aspect aren’t as terrifying, though, but maybe that’s just me.
