At 77, lauded as the founder of the Modern Zombie genre, was reported to have passed away after a short but aggressive battle against lung cancer while listening to the score of his favorite film 1952’s The Quiet Man. Reported to have died in his sleep, with wife Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and Tina, closely by his side.

While there are a number of influences for the Modern zombie genre, one of the most memorable founding fathers is George A. Romero. As the director of the 1968 Night of the Living Dead, originally labeled “Night of the Flesh Eaters,” popularized the genre.

His influences did not only pave the way for the culture to spread across films, novels, and comics but also video games. Several titles in video game history owe their works’ fruition to him. Dating back from the Old classical survival horror titles, such as Capcom’s Resident Evil, to the modern zombie culture fleshed out by Naughtydog’s The Last of Us and the Telltale game, The Walking Dead are just a few of the titles that would have or would not have been the same without his success.

Speaking of Resident Evil, he has worked on one of the franchise. After its transition from its Prototype (dubbed Resident Evil 1.5), the sequel’s (Resident Evil 2) trailers and commercials which starred Brad Renfro, and Adrienne Frantz, were products of Romero’s direction.

Fast-forward to 2004, his involvement in the Zombie films, notably Land of the Dead, bore fruit to the video games, Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler’s Green which was a first-person game on the PC.

We express our deepest condolences to the Modern Zombie genre’s founder.
