In a world where humanity is forced to live inside heavily-walled cities to defend against the monsters outside, the players take on the role of a Freelancer, part of a group of people who dare brave the dangers beyond the borders. The Freelancers wear highly-customizable exosuits known as Javelins, which can be armed with anything from jetpacks to mortars, missile launchers and shotguns alike.

Players explore the flourishing forests outside of the walls, where they fight against both marauding outlaws and rampaging beasts. Movement throughout the landscape is dynamic, with the Javelins allowing for propelled flight, swimming, and running around. Battles take place in third-person shooter style, very similar to the Mass Effect series. There is also some measure of co-op involved, allowing players to take on missions and explore the world beyond the walls with their friends.
