What is Contagion Mode?

Contagion Mode is a special game mode in The Callisto Protocol which offers the ultimate survival horror experiences for players looking for a challenge. Contagion Mode is essentially the equivalent of Impossible Mode found in the Dead Space series as both game modes feature somewhat similar mechanics.

How to Unlock Contagion Mode

Purchase The Callisto Protocol Season Pass.

Contagion Mode can only be unlocked by purchasing The Callisto Protocol Season Pass which includes the Contagion Bundle, Outer Way Skin Collection, Riot Bundle, and Story DLCs. There are no other ways to access the game mode as currently revealed from official sources.

Contagion Mode Changes

Contagion Mode implements several changes that make it the hardest game mode which the demands the most in terms of the player’s skill.

Reduced Ammo and Health Drops

Ammo and health drops will be scarce when playing on Contagion Mode, requiring you to make the most out of your supplies while going through the game. You are also more likely to resort to melee weapons to fight off most enemies which is extremely risky, especially if you have trouble dodging attacks up close.

Customized Difficulty

While not elaborated in any official material, it is expected that Contagion Mode’s difficulty will surpass even Maximum Security mode (Hard). More information on this will be added when it is confirmed in the game.

Game Difficulty Guide

Permadeath

Arguably the harshest mechanic implemented in Contagion Mode is permadeath (permanent death) which essentially means that getting a game over will automatically force you to start from the beginning of the game. In this sense, Contagion Mode can only be cleared through a no-death run which require a high level of skill and familiarity with enemies and hazards encountered throughout Black Iron Prison.

Tips for Contagion Mode

Practice dodging while using melee weapons.

Since ammo will be available in extremely low quantities throughout Contagion mode, you should try to get comfortable taking out majority of Biophage enemies you come across using melee weapons. This means that you will need to practice dodging attacks when fighting in close quarters.

Run away when outnumbered.

Learn to recognize situations where you will not be able to win and retreat. This will save you from getting hit or wasting ammo for later when you really need them.
