Strategy

Mid Lane

  • Try to farm early on in the laning stage as you will at least need all of your basic skills to opt for a kill. Use (Q) Threaded Volley to harass the enemy champion in your lane.
  • Typical Taliyah champion users zone out their opposing laners with (Q) Threaded Volley. If their enemies stray too near, they cast (E) Unraveled Earth at a location and cast the direction of (W) Seismic Shove onto the traps for good damage and slow.
  • Keep in mind that if you cast your (Q) Threaded Volley, it creates Worked Ground granting you bonus movement speed. Cast your skill in areas where you will frequently go to so as to maximize the effects of Worked Ground.
  • You can also quickly help in teamfights using your ultimate (R) Weaver’s Wall as you can ride the wall that encompasses almost half the map and you can also use this to block the enemy’s escape route completely forcing a teamfight on both sides.
  • It’s best that you play more safely once your enemy champion hits level six. However, (R) Weaver’s Wall provides great mobility, roaming potential and the ability to block and split enemy champions, you can use this effectively to roam and gank for kills.
  • Be careful when using (R) Weaver’s Wall as you can block your allies from either helping you or separating them from your team towards the enemy champions.

Core Items
Morellonomicon icon liandrys torment
Morellonomicon Liandry’s Torment Banshee’s Veil

Morellonomicon – Morellonomicon gives Taliyah’s skills added potency during team fights. This is due to the fact that this item grants her skills and additional debuff that inflicts Grievous Wounds on enemies who have low health. Furthermore, item-wise, Morellonomicon grants good Ability Power, cooldown reduction and mana replenishment each time she gets an assist or a kill.

Liandry’s Torment – Liandry’s Torment is another great core item for Taliyah. This item gives her skills added potency because most Liandry’s Torment’s passive which adds magic damage-over-time debuff on enemies who are slowed or stunned. During team fights and skirmishes, having Liandry’s Torment increases Taliyah’s damage output.

Banshee’s Veil – A standard defensive item for Taliyah, Banshee’s Veil gives her good stat coverage in bonus Ability Power, magic resistance and cooldown reduction. Moreover, Banshee’s Veil grants her a protective shield that blocks one enemy skill. Since Taliyah is often initiating with (R) Weaver’s Wall, getting this defensive item improves her chances of surviving clashes and ganks.

Zhonya’s Hourglass – Another staple defensive item, Zhonya’s Hourglass grants Taliyah an active skill that puts her in stasis, rendering her immune to crowd control. Since she often sees herself in the midst of team fights, having this as a fail-safe lets her survive clashes. Stats-wise, Zhonya’s Hourglass gives her good bonus Ability Power and armor.

Situational Items
Rylai's Crystal Scepter icon Void Staff Icon
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter Void Staff

Rylai’s Crystal Scepter – Rylai’s Crystal Scepter is another good choice for Taliyah. This grants her skills another additional slow, which synergizes well with Liandry’s Torment. Furthermore, Rylai’s Crystal Scepter gives her good Ability Power and health which makes her somewhat tanky.

Void Staff – Finally, Void Staff is another great offensive item to get for Taliyah. It gives her good Ability Power and, more importantly, additional Magic Penetration, allowing her to deal more damage with her skills against opponents.

Playing Against

  • Taliyah needs to land her skills to be effective and it takes a lot of skill to do that. You can generally avoid her skills if you are using a mobile champion so be wary when she is about to cast a skill. You can also move a lot so she’ll have a hard time figuring on where you’re going next.
  • For example, avoid staying on terrain where she casts (E) Unraveled Earth, as it will slow and damage you significantly. This will leave you open to get pelted with (Q) Threaded Volley.
  • Conversely, once she casts her skills, initiate and casts your skills on her. Her skills have relatively long cool downs which you can take advantage of.
  • You can overwhelm Taliyah if you can close the gap between the two of you since her skills primarily rely on her initiating on you. Try to be as aggressive as possible to make a Taliyah player panic when you overwhelm them before they can even land a skill.

Hard Counter

  • Ahri – Ahri is a highly mobile champion who can easily evade Taliyah’s skills, thanks to her Orb of Deception and Spirit Rush. Furthermore, she can also severely punish Taliyah should her skills miss Ahri with Charm, Orb of Deception and Fox-fire to deal significant damage.
  • LeBlanc – Similar to Ahri, LeBlanc is another highly elusive champion who is more than capable of tricking Taliyah in whiffing her skills and punishing her for it. For example, LeBlanc can feint engaging with Distortion. Once Taliyah falls for the bait and cast (Q) Threaded Volley, LeBlanc can return to safety and hit her with Sigil of Malice + Ethereal Chains for massive damage.
  • Malzahar – Malzahar is a strong laner who can take and dish out punishment, thanks to his passive. He is proficient in dealing sustained damage with Malefic Visions and Void Swarm. When Taliyah decides to engage, he can silence her with Call of the Void and hold her in place with Nether Grasp.
