What is Lords of the Fallen 2?
Lords of the Fallen (2023) is the long-awaited follow-up to the original action role-playing soulslike game Lords of the Fallen released in 2014. As with the first game, players must travel across a dark-fantasy world, battling hordes of challenging enemies throughout their journey.
Lords of the Fallen 2 features an explorable game world consisting of interconnected locations and is five times larger than its predecessor. Among the unique exploration mechanics introduced in this entry is the ability to traverse between Axiom, the land of the living and Umbral, the land of the dead.
Lords of the Fallen 2 Game Overview
Story
Below is a summary of Lords of the Fallen 2’s main story taken from the game’s official website.
“After an age of the cruellest tyranny, the demon God, Adyr, was finally defeated. But Gods… do not fall forever. Now, aeons later, Adyr’s resurrection draws nigh. As one of the fabled Dark Crusaders, journey through both the realms of the living and the dead in this expansive RPG experience, featuring colossal boss battles, fast challenging combat, thrilling character encounters, and deep, immersive storytelling. Will your legend be one of light… or one of darkness?
Dare to Hope.”
Gameplay
Class System
Unlike FromSoftware’s Soulsborne series to which Lords of the Fallen is often compared, the latest entry adopts a class system common in many online RPG franchises. Players can choose from a total of 9 unique character classes which are listed below.
Class | Class Description |
---|---|
Blackfeather Ranger | “A member of the elite band of rangers who patrolled the forests of the fief of Kinrangr before a terrible curse born of grief lay waste to their home. An accessible class ideal for those who prefer versatility over a more focused approach.” |
Condemned | “A wretched prisoner who has suffered indescribable torments, whether there was ever any truth in their guilt or not. A class for those who would rage at fate and throttle adversity with unflinching, blood-soaked hands.” |
Dark Crusader | “A Paladin of the Dark Crusaders, an elite military order in service to the Church of Orian Radiance, spreading the teachings of the church and Orius via whatever means necessary. A physically powerful class suitable for those who favour a more aggressive approach.” |
Exiled Stalker | “A former imperial assassin, their downfall and subsequent banishment from their homeland has made of them a nomadic cutthroat, killing swiftly and efficiently for nothing more than coin. A challenging class to master, but also a lethally effective one.” |
Hallowed Knight | “A stalwart knight whose loyalty to the Cleric and the Hallowed Sentinels is matched only by their determination to destroy Adyr and the Rhogar. A class focused on physical prowess bolstered by Radiance.” |
Mournstead Infantry | “A seasoned Mournstead foot soldier whose time in the mud and blood and tumult of battle taught them the value of agility, speed and keeping the enemy at a distance. A class for those who favour dexterity and light defence over strength and bulkier armour.” |
Orian Preacher | “A wandering preacher whose unshakeable faith in the divine will of Orius guides their way while they spread his holy light. A physically vulnerable class reliant on Radiance, whether for protection or searing the sinful flesh of heretics.” |
Partisan | “A dutiful Mournstead fighter whose sorrow at the ruination of their kingdom by occupying forces only fuels their defiant struggle in its name, whether fighting up-close with their steel flail or from range with a crossbow. A strong and dependable all-rounder class.” |
Pyric Cultist | “A fervent worshipper of Adyr who has sworn to see the natural order finally restored and humanity’s one true god return to his rightful place as their ruler. A high-risk class reliant on proficiency in Inferno.” |
Udirangr Warwolf | “A hardened champion from the land of Udirangr who has proven themselves worthy of their people’s honoured rank of Warwolf by completing the requisite ancient trial, one which few survive. A devastating but lightly armoured class driven by raw strength, for good or ill.” |
Initial stats, weapons, armor, and items vary across different classes to embody their playstyles and unique characteristics. From here, players can level-up their character naturally according to their strengths, though experimentation can also lead to creating viable builds.
Traversing Axiom and Umbral
The world of Lords of the Fallen 2 is split into the realm of the living and the dead which are called Axiom and Umbral respectively. Using an otherworldly lantern, players can cross to Umbral from Axiom throughout their journey.
The duality of the game’s world brings forth new mechanics to exploration not seen in the first game. The same area in the game, for example, may have different enemies, passageways, and loot depending on whether you are in Axiom or Umbral. Certain NPCs may also only become available after meeting requirements and conditions in one realm or the other.
