People are still coming back to New Vegas for “New California” and other Mods

Patrolling the Mojave makes you wish for a nuclear winter, but you don’t always have to brave the hot, drypan sands of the Mojave desert, fighting off abominable snake-coyote hybrids and men in skirts and fluffy red feathers. With a faithful Nexus Mods community that still creates new mods, you can enjoy New Vegas anew, either utterly breaking the game (sometimes literally) with bombastic and silly cheat mods, or heightening immersion with specific additions that enhance gameplay.

Another very enjoyable mod genre would be quest mods. There have been many, many, many famous quest mods on the Nexus, including the New Vegas Bounties series, the Rockwell series, the also upcoming Fallout: New FrontierOne of the coolest and most well-produced of these mods would be Project Brazil, is a total conversion mod that takes place in Vault 18.

News came recently straight from Project Brazil developers that they were renaming the mod to Fallout: New California–an obvious callback to the base game’s location-based title. You can find their official post below:

The Gist

  • In a long, goofy tirade, Project Brazil developers announce that the game will be renamed “New California,” meaning the events of PB were in a vault located somewhere in the West Coast.
  • Project Brazil was an intentionally misleading codename.
  • The developers announce that this was a fully converted engine to the point that it retextured every object in-game.
  • The game will be a whopping 6GB altogether, and can be found on Moddb and Nexus.
  • An alpha version has been released to a few close modders. This means that the full game might be released sooner than we think.

What we (Generally) know so far

  • The game has been divided into two parts. You can already play Part 1 provided that you have Fallout: New Vegas on steam. Purchase the game here!
  • Your character is a resident of Vault 18, and the consequences of your actions will shape the rest of your life–allowing you to be a Nerd or an Athlete.
  • Part 2 will be set in 2260–a decade before the in-game faction, New California Republic sought to annex New Vegas.
  • The story will take place after the events of Fallout 2, the NCR-Enclave War, and the events of Fallout 1, wherein the Vault Dweller defeats the Master.
  • The story will be located in San BernardinoCalifornia.
  • Three major factions will compete to control San Bernardino:
    • Survivalist Raiders, a group of bandits that refuse to be absorbed into the New California Republic’s federal government.
    • New California Republic, an expansionist faction that was founded by Fallout 1’s Tandi.
    • The Master’s Remnants, giant, hulking humanoid monsters with massive amounts of intelligence, immune to radiation. These are the remnants of the Master’s army, which was defeated by the protagonist of the original Fallout.
  • The game will be in the original Fallout‘s playable map, but will be independent from the old locations. According to their Facebook QA, San  Bernadino is “right on the edge, between Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas.”
  • The developers boast a whopping 19 hours of raw voice acting. Playthroughs might be as long or equally longer. In fact, the developer states that “how long” would be about 24 hours, give or take.
  • The dev implied that this could be a straight prequel to New Vegas, allowing your character to be the courier that gets shot in the head at the beginning of the base game.

What do you think? Will this be as amazing–or even surpass–the base game in terms of writing and story? I’ll have to find out myself, but the concept is utterly exciting.

For one, I’m a super fan of the series, and I think that the West Coast saga was always better in terms of writing, lore, factions and the like. Fallout 4 attempted to learn from ‘Vegas, but was so stream lined that every faction fell short. So this game–if it succeeds (and it will)– will be an exciting addition to the West Coast saga of Fallout, a true love letter to the old series.
