Game Review / Writer's blog - Brutal Last of Us Part 2 Trailer Released: News

Naughty Dog released a new Last of Us Part 2 Trailer. In this article, we'll break down the trailer and talk about the issues surrounding it.

Brutal Last of Us Part 2 Trailer Released

Game developers showcased a host of video game trailers at Paris Games Week 2017 in order to get fans excited for 2018. One of these trailers is the brutal Last of Us Part 2 trailer.

Unlike the subtler reveal trailer released last December, which only showed the aftermath of a long and bloody battle, this trailer does not hold back on painful imagery.

The sequel to the 2013 hit, The Last of Us, is slated to be released sometime in 2018 but has already garnered awards for releasing its trailer. In January 2017, the PlayStation Blog gave The Last of Us Part 2 the award for Most Anticipated Game of the Year. In the Golden Joystick Awards, it was also nominated for the Most Wanted Game award.

Trailer Breakdown

At the beginning of the trailer, we see a pair of hooded men dragging an unknown woman down a path in a forest to be executed. A car burns to her left. The men drag her to a spot as she struggles to free herself. The camera pans slightly up and left so we can see a group of disemboweled bodies hanging by their necks. A noose is placed around her neck, and she is pulled by her neck onto a bucket.

Another woman, a priestess, enters the scene and draws a knife to start disemboweling her. This would-be executor prays: “They are nested with sin. Free them, that they may know…”

She is interrupted by a whistle and turns back to see her henchmen drag a young woman into the clearing.

“Yara. Where is the other apostate?” Yara spits on the priestess’s face. The woman does not immediately react, only saying “Clip her wings.”

At 2:27, one of the henchmen holds her down as the other crushes her arm with a hammer. The henchman almost incapacitates the other arm when an arrow flies off-screen to take him and the other henchman out.

A short scuffle occurs, ending with the priestess dead.

We see an archer with a shaved head, Lev, enter the scene. Yara asks her to cut down the woman currently hanging to death. The unknown woman quickly takes the hammer.

They hear a sound in the distance. Something is emerging from the forest. We get to see the clickers before the screen fades to black.

Too Brutal?

Some people might consider the Last of Us Part 2 trailer as needlessly brutal. In fact, Forbes contributor Eric Kain claims that the preview made him “sick to his stomach.” And he isn’t alone. So many people complained about the trailer that Sony Executive Jim Ryan had to respond to the backlash. In an interview with the Telegraph, Ryan said that “The Last of Us obviously is a game made by adults to be played by adults.”

However, is the brutality really justified? Neil Druckmann does say that compared to the original game’s theme of love, The Last of Us Part 2 is all about hatred. Maybe Naughty Dog released this trailer in order to depict that darker turn in the story.

I’m personally worried that this will cause some kind of darkness-induced audience apathy. However, Naughty Dog hasn’t failed us yet, as the success of Uncharted: Lost Legacy proves.
