What is SaGa: Emerald Beyond?

The latest installment to the acclaimed SaGa series.

SaGa: Emerald Beyond is a brand-new entry to the acclaimed SaGa series of role-playing games. Players can choose from six different main characters (including a duo of protagonists) to travel through 17 unique worlds such as heavenly realms and even the underground world.

Story content as diverse as the number of characters.

SaGa: Emerald Beyond focuses on replayability with the story and game content changing as you go through the game multiple times.

The number of story branches has been described to be the largest in the series where clearing one main character’s tale will affect that of another in the game.

SaGa: Beyond Emerald’s story is realized by playing through the scenario of the game’s main characters or by going through multiple playthroughs. As such, certain story events and details may be unresolved or incomplete on a first run.

Battle System

Glimmer System

The series’ unique Glimmer system appears in SaGa: Beyond Emerald which allows characters to spontaneously learn new weapon skills and abilities during battle. After acquiring a new technique through Glimmer, it will become usable on the character’s next turn.

Human characters are able to use special “self-styled” skills in battle. Characters belonging to the monster race, meanwhile, have access to a special ability to “absorb” moves from enemies.

Techniques in battle that you no longer use can be unlearned via the “unleash” feature as well.

Formations and Roles

The Formations and Roles system also makes its return in SaGa: Beyond Emerald. By adopting different party formations, you can adjust the turn speed of specific characters to gain the advantage. Assigning roles to a party member, meanwhile, will apply different stat modifiers. Both of these mechanics remain as important elements in the game as with past titles in the series.

Alignment

Perhaps the most important element in the battle in the game is the Alignment system.

By aligning characters together, they can gain the advantage against foes through cooperation. Note that enemies are also able to unify their strength against you which makes encounters a struggle of building your party’s alignment while disrupting the opponent’s own efforts to do so.

Showstopper State

When there are no allies nearby (caused by positioning or allies getting knocked out), a character will enter the Showstopper state which allows them to perform a coordinate assault of multiple skills that they have learned. This results in massive damage inflicted on targets by the character in Showstopper state, opening up opportunities to mount a comeback even if your comrades are put out of action.

Bear in mind that enemies can also activate a similar empowered state called Dominance. Because of this, a strong enemy who fights alone becomes incredibly dangerous and can easily wipe out your party if taken lightly. Be sure to make adjustments to your strategy for such situations.
