How to Farm Metal Shards in Horizon Forbidden West
Metal Shards are the main form of currency in Horizon Forbidden West that allow you to purchase weapons, outfits, and other useful items from merchants. Shards are also used for crafting various types of ammunition which are essential for Aloy’s unique style of ranged and melee combat.
How to Earn Metal Shards
Progress through main story quests.
Doing main story quests will allow you to amass a decent amount of Metal Shards by killing and looting human and machine enemies. Note that stronger foes such as medium- and large-sized machines yield considerably more shards compared to smaller machines and regular human enemies.
You will also occasionally come across treasure boxes containing Metal Shards as you explore new areas in the game. Because of this, try to search every nook and cranny in the Forbidden West to accumulate as much money as you can.
Complete side quests.
Clearing side quests is also a good way to farm Metal Shards as they allow you to explore even more areas where various enemies will appear. You can initiate side quests by talking to different non-player characters (NPCs) found at different settlements and locations in the game.
Clear Hunting Lodge trials.
Metal shards are also rewarded for completing Hunting Lodge trials which are essentially a series of challenges that test your skills as a hunter. In addition to shards, useful resources can also be obtained which you can trade or sell off to merchants to earn even more money.
