NEO: The World Ends with You is a single-player, action role-playing game developed by Square Enix and h.a.n.d. and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Epic Games Store. It is the second game that follows the classic RPG video game, The World Ends with You, launched last April 22, 2008, for Nintendo DS. The first game was also released last August 27, 2012, for iOS and June 26, 2014, for Android as The World Ends with You: Solo Remix. In addition, there was a release for the Nintendo Switch last October 12, 2018, called The World Ends with You: Final Mix.

NEO: The World Ends with You is considered as a semi-sequel and remake title of the original game. According to Tetsuya Nomura, one of the game’s producers, this new game is more of a sequel to the Anime series that was released in early 2021. NEO: The World Ends with You will come out this July 27, 2021, for all console platforms both physical and digital. The PC version is scheduled for Summer 2021 exclusive to Epic Games Store.

The NEO: The World Ends with You video game distinct itself with its unique art and character style similar to the Kingdom Hearts series. It also features an urban fantasy and stylized setting inspired by the youthful culture of Shibuya, Japan like with Persona 5. The whole series is critically acclaimed for its graphics, soundtrack, and its integration of gameplay into city settings like Shibuya and Shinjuku.

Story

NEO: The World Ends with You takes place in a recreated and anime-stylized Shibuya. It centers on the main character, Rindo Kanade, who is forced to compete in a life-or-death survival game called Reaper’s Game.

Together with his classmate and friend, Tosai “Fret” Furusawa, they form a team called “Wicked Twisters”. Joined by Sho Minamoto, a former character from the original game, and Nagi, a college student, they use their unique psychic abilities to survive over the course of weeks.

There are some landmarks in the game that depicts real-life places like Tower Records and Parco. Since it features a modern 2021 setting, flip phones from the original game are replaced by smartphones as forms for communications between characters in the game.

Gameplay

NEO: The World Ends with You features unique gameplay systems. Here is a quick rundown of the NEO: The World Ends with You’s unique gameplay experience:

Battle System

The game showcases a flashy real-time action battle system where all active party members are usable during a battle. The player can have up to six active members and all can attack at the same time to defeat Noises. Party members not being controlled do not remain idle and move on their own. However, they do not engage the enemy unless they’re being used by the player.

The whole party shares the same health bar and each character’s move is limited to the pin equipped to them. You can use one, two, or all pins to deal damage but you cannot spam them endlessly all throughout the battle. The yellow gauge below each pin will run out making each pin unusable for a brief period. It is important to think carefully about your strategy and manage your pin gauge usage in real-time while engaging these Noises.

Pins

Each teammate is limited to one pin equipped and they range between dealing damage, healing allies, and boosting psych abilities. Pins level up when they are equipped by party members.

Take note that each pin corresponds to a specific button in your controller. There are over 300 collectible pins in the game for your to collect and upgrade so your party has a nearly limitless combination of psych attacks.

Noises

Noises are the target enemies your party must defeat in order to progress in the Reapers’ Game. They are spread across multiple locations since they are attracted by negative feelings of the living.
