What is Scanning?
Scanning is a key gameplay mechanic and ability in Neo: The World Ends With You that allows you to enter a state of concentration to read people’s thoughts or see invisible enemies like the Noise.
How to Scan
To scan your surroundings, press R1 (PS4) or R (Nintendo Switch). Doing so alters the appearance of the environment as you concentrate, displaying readable thoughts in the form of blue bubbles above people in Shibuya as well as red Noise symbols.
Uses of Scanning
Gathering Clues and Hints
Scanning is an essential ability in the game for gathering information from people around Shibuya. By reading people’s thoughts, you can find out useful clues to complete your objective.
Fighting Noise
Combat against the Noise is also initiated through the use of Scanning. Upon activating the ability, Noise symbols will appear in your current location. Approaching them will provoke the Noise who will begin to come at you. Coming into contact with the Noise will start the battle.
How to Unlock Scanning
Acquired After Meeting Shoka and Susukichi in Shibuya
Scanning is unlocked after meeting Shoka and Susukichi in Shibuya. After acquiring the ability, you will be able to initiate combat against Noise by interacting with Noise symbols found all around the city.
Tips for Scanning
Scan as often as possible.
Frequently scanning your surroundings allows you to pick up useful information on your current objective, location of certain items (especially collectibles), and other interesting details. Try to scan as often as possible to avoid missing out on these as you explore Shibuya.
