Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree Walkthrough and Guide for Paper Mario RPG: The Thousand-Year Door
Things to Do before Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree
- Defeat Bowser
- Give the Contact Lens to Zess T.
- Visit the Magic Shop
- Invest coins in Lumpy
- Complete Trouble Center Bulletin Board Requests
- Raise the level of your party members
Defeat Bowser
If you haven’t yet defeated Bowser, it’s best to challenge and defeat him after finishing Chapter 1. At this point, the level difference between you and Bowser is minimal.
You’ll find Bowser on the eastern side of Glitzville. He can be easily defeated if you have Koops in your party and utilize the hammer for your attacks.
Give the Contact Lens to Zess T.
Upon finishing Chapter 1, the Contact Lens becomes purchasable at Toad Bros. Bazaar. Buy the Contact Lens for 10 coins and give it to Zess T., who is blocking the way to Rogueport’s West Side.
Once this is done, access to Rogueport’s West is unlocked, and Zess T. will be able to cook some dishes for you.

Invest in Lumpy
Investing 100 coins in Lumpy can yield a higher return. The initial investment earns you 300 coins; the second, 500 coins; and the third, 999 coins, upon completing Chapter 6. Note that you can invest three times, from the prologue until the start of Chapter 4.
This is a beneficial deal, so it’s wise to reserve some coins for this opportunity.
Complete Trouble Center Bulletin Board Requests
We highly recommend completing Trouble Center Bulletin Board requests after completing each chapter. The following requests will become available after Chapter 1:
Request Name | Location | Rewards |
---|---|---|
Try to find me! (Koopook) | On the 5th Floor where you get off the passage above the area with green switches and blocks at Hooktail Castle (the area where there is an iron grate where you can get “Fish Mushroom”). | Special Card |
Listen to me! (Mayor Kroop) | Kroop’s house at Petalburg. | Turtley Leaf |
Order me an item! (Plenn T.) | Toad Bros. Bazaar shop at Rogueport Main Square. | Ultra Shroom |
Raise the level of your party members.
Head to Merlon’s house to increase your party members’ level in exchange for Shine Sprites x3. This is to prepare them for the upcoming battles in Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree.
It is recommended to upgrade Koops and have him learn Shell Shield, which will be very useful when going up against strong enemies and even boss fights.
Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree Walkthrough and Guide for Paper Mario RPG: The Thousand-Year Door
Entering the Boggly Forest.
1 | Before going to the sewers, head to the Mayor’s house and turn Mario sideways to get the “Mega Rush P Badge” in the yard. |
---|---|
2 | Head to the area with the large yellow block in Rogueport Town’s basement, the same place where you acquired the “Black Key.” |
3 | Use Paper Mode to slip through the iron grate next to the hole that Punio used to access the back area. |
4 | Speak to Punio. |
5 | Speak to Punio again and ask him to reveal the secret path. |
6 | After Punio revealed the secret path, continue along the left side of the secret path to get the “Damage Dodge Badge”. |
7 | Head to the Boggly Forest through the pipe in the back. |
8 | Follow Punio to the Great Tree. |
The Boggly Forest
1 | Once you reach the fourth area of the forest, get on the ledge on the forest’s background, then press the blue switch to reach the area. |
---|---|
2 | Get the “Star Piece” next to the blue switch. |
3 | Get the badge “P-Down, D-up Badge” from the hidden block that appears when you jump on the 10th stump from the left of the area. |
4 | After pressing the blue switch, use Koops’ shell attack to get the Shine Sprite on the left. |
5 | Use the Warp Pipe on the left to reach the other side. |
6 | Continue along the path until you find another Warp Pipe. |
7 | Use the Warp Pipe and head to Madam Flurrie’s house. |
8 | Speak to Madam Flurrie. |
9 | Hit the third tree with a hammer on the left side of Madam Flurrie’s house to get a Star Piece. |
10 | Get the Star Piece on the left side of the Warp Pipe near Madam Flurrie’s house. |
11 | Return to the second area of the Boggly Forest and prepare for a boss fight. |
Defeat The Shadow Sirens
1 | The Shadow Sirens consist of the three sisters, which are Vivian, Marilyn, and Beldam. We recommend defeating Marilyn first, as she has the highest attack power and is capable of using AoE lightning attacks. |
---|---|
2 | Once Marilyn has been defeated, focus on Beldam next, since she has the ability to shrink Mario and his allies. When in a “tiny” state, Mario’s attack power is reduced, which is why Beldam is the ideal second target. |
3 | Use Koops’ Power Shell and Shell Slam in order to hit all enemies at once. Doing so will allow you to deal damage to the Shadow Sirens at the same time. |
4 | After the battle, pick up the “Necklace” and return to Madam Flurrie’s house. |
5 | Give the “Necklace” to Madam Flurrie. |
6 | Once Madam Flurrie receives the “Necklace”, she will then join your party. |
7 | Climb from the side of the large tree, then turn right and use Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to reveal the secret entrance. |
Enter the Great Tree
1 | Upon entering the Great Tree, you will encounter two X-Nauts enemies. |
---|---|
2 | Prioritize the X-Naut that took a potion, as it will power up and becomes huge after a few turns. |
3 | Follow the path ahead. |
4 | You will encounter another X-Naut enemy after you passed through the area with jail cells. |
5 | Defeat the X-Naut to get the “Red Key”. |
6 | Return to the jail cells and free Elder Puni. |
7 | Bring Elder Puni to the other Punnies in the first area to get the “Puni Orb”. |
Gathering the Punnies
1 | Place the “Puni Orb” on the pedestal in the second area to access the Warp Pipe. |
---|---|
2 | Place the “Puni Orb” again on the pedestal, then use Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to blow the Punnies to the other side. |
3 | By using Madam Flurrie’s ice breath, you will be able to gather the Punnies inside the bubbles in one area. |
4 | Get the Shine Sprite located in the lower area where the bubbles are. |
5 | Follow the path ahead. |
6 | Keep in mind that the Punnies will run away if an enemy approaches you. Therefore, after defeating an enemy, approach the Punnies that ran away or look for them in the lower area if some of them are still missing. |
7 | Get the Shine Sprite after passing through the area with bubbles. Use Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to blow away the black object blocking the way, then head down to reach the Shine Sprite. |
8 | Once you reach an intersection, proceed to the right. |
9 | Help the Punnies win the battle against the Jabbies. Use Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to blow the Jabbies against the wall, but make sure to avoid blowing away the Punnies as well. |
Get the Blue Key and the 101 Punnies
1 | Get the “Blue Key” from the treasure chest in the back area where the Punnies and Jabbies fought. |
---|---|
2 | Return to the jail cells and use the “Blue Key” to free the Punnies. |
3 | Once you have freed the punnies, the total number of punnies that are with you should be 101. If you are missing even 1, you will not be able to solve the obstacles in the next areas. Speak to Elder Puni if you are missing some Punnies. |
4 | Proceed to the area with an intersection, then cross the narrow path and turn left. |
5 | Defeat the spiders along the narrow path to prevent the Punnies from running away. If some of the Punnies ran away, backtrack to get them back. |
6 | Open the entrance to the secret shop by using Madam Flurrie’s ice breath on the leftmost wall. |
7 | Speak to Jabba on the left side of the secret shop to recruit him to your party. |
8 | Get the ? Badge on the block near a save point and the area where you encountered two spiders. Use Koops to go under the block to make a platform appear. |
9 | As you go deeper, you will encounter more Jabbies. |
10 | Help the Punnies win against the Jabbies by using Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to blow them away. |
11 | Follow the path ahead. |
12 | Place the Puni Orb on the pedestal in the back area. After the Puni Orb is placed, a cage will suddenly appear, locking Mario and the Punnies. |
13 | Escape the cage by using Mario’s Paper Mode. Leave the Punnies behind and head down to the lower area using the pipe. |
Set the Punnies free
1 | Once you reach the lower area, check out the black pillars. |
---|---|
2 | Remember the pattern and order of the pillars. |
3 | Solve the puzzle in the area where you acquired the “Red Key”. (The same area where the Punnies fought the Jabbies for the first time.) |
4 | Arrange the pillars in the following order: Sun, Moon, Puni, and Star. |
5 | Get the “Super Boots” from the treasure chest in the back area. Once acquired, Mario will be able to perform Spin Jumps by pressing the A button while midair. This also allows you to break or hit objects in the air. |
6 | Return to the previous area and use your newly acquired Spin Jump on the X platform. |
7 | Afterwards, jump across the pillars and use Koops to grab the “Charge Badge” on the top of the leftmost pillar. |
8 | You can also get a Shine Sprite by jumping across the pillars. |
9 | Head back to the area where the Punnies are being held. |
10 | Enter the cage using Paper Mode, then place the Puni Orb on the pedastal. Doing so will reveal another platform. |
11 | Break the platform using your Spin Jump, then use Madam Flurrie’s ice breath to bring the Punnies down into the hole. |
12 | Go down to the area where the Punnies are blown away. |
The Crystal Star
1 | Once the Punnies are free, follow the path ahead. |
---|---|
2 | Use Koops to hold and press the blue switch. |
3 | Release the switch after you go up. |
4 | Get the Shine Sprite by jumping over the water lilies. |
5 | Place the “Puni Orb” on the pedestal and proceed to the area below. |
6 | Place the “Puni Orb” on the pedestal in the center. |
7 | Follow Lord Crump into the pipe. |
8 | Return to the first area within the time limit. |
9 | Save the game and prepare for a boss fight. Make sure to recover before heading to the boss fight. |
Magnus von Grapple Boss Fight
Magnus von Grapple will launch his two rocket fist at Mario’s party when his HP drops down to a certain amount.
These rocket fists have high attack power and can deal considerable damage to your party. It’s highly recommended to target them immediately once they appear to avoid damage. Utilize powerful jumps, hammer attacks, or Madam Flurrie’s Gale Force to quickly destroy Magnus von Grapple’s rocket fists.
