What is Super Mario RPG Remake?

A remake of the critically-acclaimed Super Mario role-playing released in 1996.

Super Mario RPG Remake (2023) is a modern remake of the landmark title Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996. Featuring updated visuals, gameplay mechanics, and features, Super Mario RPG Remake retells the adventure of Mario and his friends through the original’s familiar storyline and isometric turn-based combat.

New Features

Updated Graphics

Super Mario RPG Remake’s graphics have been redeveloped to harness the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch. Character models, locations, battle animations, and visual effects have all been updated, making the game world more alive and vibrant compared to its source material.

New Cutscenes

New cinematics were also added to the remake which include story sequences and boss intros that were not available in the original version of the game. This lets players experience a deeper sense of adventure with Mario and his friends.

New Music Arrangements

Super Mario RPG Remake also features new music arrangements by the original game’s composer Yoko Shimomura. Players will be able to listen to updated version of popular tracks such as Beware the Forest’s Mushrooms, Rose Town, and Docaty Mountain Railroad in the remake.

Post-Game Boss Battles

Also among the new content added to Super Mario RPG Remake are post-game boss battles which lets players take on enhanced versions of major bosses fought during the main story. Most of these souped-up enemies will require keener strategy than those employed when fighting their regular counterparts, presenting players fun challenges to do after beating the game.

New Combat Features

Timing Attacks via Action Commands

Timing a button press during a character’s attack improves its effectiveness and may have a chance to hit multiple enemies. This mechanic adds a new layer of action to the game’s traditional turn-based combat, making battles feel more intense and involved than before.

Similarly, pressing certain buttons at the right moment when being attacked may reduce the damage dealt of enemy attacks.

Triple Moves

Successfully timing Action Command button presses fills the new Triple Move gauge, allowing Mario’s party to perform a powerful all-out attack on enemies. This gauge is displayed on the lower left corner of the screen.

Chain Buffs

Chains is another new combat mechanic in the remake which grants Mario’s party special buffs by performing well-timed Action Commands offensively and defensively. These effects grant characters increased stats and parameters which is useful during tough encounters such as boss battles throughout the game.
